Swimmers Start Day 1 Strong
Iowa State came out of the gate hot in the 500 freestyle, the first event of the morning's prelim rounds. Five of six Cyclones who swam qualified for finals, while the sixth placed one spot from qualifying. In the 200 IM, the Cyclones were led by sophomore Kasey Roberts and senior Marissa Engel, who finished second and fourth, respectively. Roberts clocked in at 2:01.74, which at the time was the eighth-fastest 200 IM time in Iowa State history.
In the 50 free, Iowa State took six of the top 24 times in prelims and qualified nine swimmers for finals. Eight Cyclones posted a new season-best finish, while freshman Evan Hundley (0:24.52) and junior Kenzie Goudreau (0:24.04) registered personal records.
Personal Records Continue to Fall in Finals
Following a midday break, Iowa State picked up right where it left off in the morning. The Cyclones set 11 season-best times and four personal records in the finals rounds, including four times in the all-time top-10 of their respective events.
The Cyclone squad of Alex Flatness, Laura Miksch, Maddie Rastall and Savanna Townsend took second place out of 21 teams in the 200 freestyle relay. Their time of 1:34.76 cut 4.44 seconds off Iowa State's season-best entering the day and would have been a new meet record, had the group not been edged out by Nebraska's 'A' squad.
Iowa State followed up the performance with four top-15 finishes in the 500 free, led by a time of 4:55.96 from Mary Kate Luddy.
In the 200 IM, Roberts and Engel both improved on their season-best times set in the morning's prelim rounds. Roberts took third overall, touching in 2:01.62, following my Engel's personal record of 2:01.75. Roberts now owns four of Iowa State's top-10 finishes in the 200 IM.
The 50 free was stacked with Cyclones, who comprised seven of the night's top-25 finishers, including two in the top-10. Flatness once again helped lead the ISU charge, edging out her personal record by 0.01 seconds to set a new one at 0:24.43.
The Cyclones' 'A' and 'B' squads claimed sixth and seventh place in the 400 medley relay, respectively, to round out a day of stellar performances. The 'A' team, made up of Guy Shilon, Roberts, Luddy and Townsend finished in 3:46.11 to become the No. 8 400 MR team in school history.
