AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State men's and women's track teams completed day one of the 2015 Indoor Big 12 Championships, held at the Lied Recreation Center in Ames, Iowa.
The Iowa State women were led by an impressive all-around performance in the 5,000-meter run, finishing second, third, fourth and fifth, respectively, in the race. Margaret Connelly led ISU by with a runner-up performance with a time of 16:10.86. Erin Hooker raced from the eighth place heading into the final lap to earn a fourth place finish with a personal best time of 16:24.89. Senior Katy Moen took third place and Crystal Nelson was fifth.
Junior heptathlete Taylor Sanderson tied personal best marks in the shot put and 60-meter dash. Sanderson enters day two of the Big 12 Championships in third place of the heptathlon with 3045 points. The 60-meter hurdles, pole vault and 1,000-meter run remain in the competition.
Both Christian DeLago and Brian Biekert qualified for the men's mile run. DeLago cut over nine-seconds off his previous career high. The final round of the men's mile is scheduled for tomorrow at 2:20 p.m.
Sophomore Heidi Engelhardt qualified for the finals of the women's mile run. The Westerville, Ohio native finished the race with a personal best time of 4:49.39. Katherin DeSimone just missed the cut for the final round of the race with a ninth place finish.
The 600-meter run saw one Cyclone qualify for both the men's and women's sides. Alyssa Gonzalez earned eighth place and a spot in tomorrow's finals posting a personal best time of 1:23.37. On the men's side, Jacob Hoogensen cruised to a seventh-place finish and a spot in the finals.
Senior Edward Kemboi and Brandon Wheat both qualified for the final round of the men's 1,000-meter run. Kemboi took second place in the preliminary round of the race with a time of 2:25.99, while Brandon Wheat was fifth with a personal best time of 2:25.23. In the women's side of the 1,000-meter run, freshman Evelyne Guay cut over six seconds off her personal best time clocking a 2:49.47 and earned a spot in tomorrow's final event.
Four different Cyclones earned a spot in tomorrow's championship 800-meter run, led by the nation's leader in the race, Kemboi. Trailing the Eldoret, Kenya native were Patrick Peterson, Matt Bevil, Brandon Barnes and Jacob Aune. The final of the men's 800-meter run is scheduled for tomorrow at 3:50 p.m. CT.
Teams are set to return to action tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. CT with the men's 60-meter hurdles portion of the heptathlon.
