TUCSON, Ariz. – All-American
Scott Fernandez made history today, as the Iowa State senior carded a final-round 69 to claim medalist honors at the National Invitational Tournament.
Fernandez' 205 tally (70-66-69) was seven shots better than a pair of second place finishers and it tied for the fourth-best 54-hole score in school history. But more importantly, however, the victory gave Fernandez his fourth collegiate tournament title, breaking the school record for most victories in a career by a Cyclone men's linkster.
Iowa State head coach
Andrew Tank had the opportunity to watch history being made.
“Scott drove the golf ball beautifully all week,” Tank said. “He was able to put the ball in positions to be aggressive and hit his wedges well to give him a lot of birdie opportunities. It sort of all came together this week. Four tournament victories, what else can you say? That is really impressive and well-deserved.”
Iowa State jumped six spots to finish fifth in the team race at 875. The Cyclones shot the second-best score of the final round with a 1-under 287. California was the team champion at 856.
Fernandez, who posted his 22nd and 23rd sub-70 rounds of his career in the tournament, entered the final round with a meager two-shot lead. He was even-par through 13 holes before catching fire with four-straight birdies to put a firm stranglehold on the medalist race. He now passes Nate McCoy, Jason Knutzon, Jeremy Lyons and Travis Korver, who all had three tournament victories in their Cyclone careers.
Fernandez credited an improved focus for his success during the week.
“I managed to stay calm and keep playing the course without forcing anything,” Fernandez said. “Coach (Tank) walked with me today and I never asked him about the scores and just played my game. Coach helped me a lot the last three days on providing me a clear picture on each shot.”
Nick Voke joined Fernandez with a final-round 69 this afternoon to move into a tie for 25th in the medalist race at 220 (77-74-69).
Ruben Sondjaja tied for 42nd at 224 and
Sam Daley tied for 48th at 226, respectively.
The Cyclones are back in action at the General Hackler Championship, March 9-10 in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
