IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Iowa State men's golf team didn't falter in the final round of the Hawkeye Invitational this afternoon. Holding a one-shot lead heading into today's final 18 holes, the Cyclones carded a 4-under 284 to claim a five-shot victory over second-place Idaho.
The Cyclones tallied a 54-hole 847 today en route to their first tournament team title since winning the 2011 Bridgestone Invitational.
It was a total team effort, as three Cyclones placed in the top-10. Head coach Andrew Tank was extremely pleased with his team's performance.
“I think it is really rewarding to see the team get a victory,” Tank said. “The guys have been working really hard, especially in the last month, and I think our play has improved steadily. It was great to see us come out on top.”
Senior Sam Daley was the runner-up medalist after carding a blistering 66 in the final round this afternoon to tie his career-low round as a Cyclone. Daley, who carded rounds of 73-68-66 for a 207 total, had six birdies and zero blemishes on his card today. It was his sixth career top-10 finish.
Daley has two runner-up finishes in his last three tournaments.
“He (Daley) led us this weekend, as did our other senior Scott (Fernandez),” Tank said. “He (Daley) was very solid. He has been working very hard on his game and starting to reap the rewards.”
Daley's short game was the key to his outstanding round today.
“I stayed patient early on in the round,” Daley said. “I was making my putts, and then I got on a roll. My short game was really good. I was able to get up and down, and the times I hit it close, I made birdies.”
Senior All-American Scott Fernandez placed in the top-10 for a school-record 28th time in his career by tying for fourth at 210 (70-68-72). Fernandez, who has seven top-10 finishes on the season, has shot 72 or lower in each of his last nine rounds.
Sophomore Ruben Sondjaja notches his second top-10 finish of the season, tying for 10th with rounds of 69-70-74 (213). Nick Voke tied for 23rd at 219.
Up next for the Cyclones is the 2015 Big 12 Championships, April 27-29 at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Okla.
