FAYETTEVILLE, Arkansas – A week after making history sprinting, ISU freshman Kate Hall made history jumping Friday at the Razorback Invitational. Hall is now Iowa State's school record holder in the long jump after her leap of 21-5 1/2 to close the long jump competition.
In the team competition of the Razorback Invitational, the Cyclone women are in sixth place with 16.0 points, while the ISU men are in 11th with 1.20 points.
Kate Hall was enormous in the 60-meter dash last weekend at her home track in Ames, with her 7.30 being the second-fastest time in school history and putting her in the top-20 of the world. This week, she did it in the long jump. Her third jump of the day of 21-1 1/2 broke ISU's 19-year old school record of 21-0 3/4 by Trina Radske. In third going into the final round, Hall left with a bang, rocking a 21-5 1/2 to move up to second and into the top-five nationally in 2016.
Hall's teammate, Jhoanmy Luque, is now the third-best indoor long jumper in ISU history with her second jump of 20-7 1/4 earning her eighth place in the meet.
In the multi-events competition, Taylor Sanderson had a big day, recording three personal bests in four events. He kicked off the day with a 7.09 in the 60-meter dash. In the long jump and shot put, Sanderson had already set PRs in those respective events in the first two weeks of his season. Friday, the All-American raised his game again, finishing in fourth in both events with career bests in the long jump (23-8 3/4) and shot put (44-6). He closed out the day with another fourth place finish, this in the high jump by clearing 6-5.
Sanderson closed day one in fifth place overall with 3,188 points. When Sanderson broke the school record in the heptathlon at the Big 12 Indoor Championships last season, he was at 3,045 after four events.
Iowa State's women's distance medley relay team impressed, with the quartet of Perez Rotich, Jasmine Staebler, Erinn Stenman-Fahey and Evelyne Guay taking fifth in 11:20.88, the sixth fastest quartet in ISU indoor DMR history. Emma Whigham impressed as part of loaded women's 200-meter dash field, with her 24.99 making her the first Cyclone to break 25 seconds in the indoor 200 since 2009, and ninth in ISU history in the event.
