TOPEKA, Kansas – Iowa State's swimmers and divers resumed action at their first championship-style meets of the season Saturday. The swimmers held onto their third-place standing at the Kansas Classic, while the divers wrapped up the Mizzou Invite with their first competition on the platform this season.
Kansas Classic
Iowa State picked up Saturday night right where it left off Friday night: making season-best times drop like flies. First to do so was the Cyclones' 200 medley relay A squad of Harper Emswiler, Kasey Roberts, Kenzie Goudreau and Laura Miksch, who teamed up to touch the wall in 1:42.86. Their mark beat the previous lowest time of the year by over 3.6 seconds.
All three Cyclones in the 400 IM cut time from prelims to set new season-best marks, led by Kami Pankratz's finish of 4:28.03 in the B heat. Mary Kate Luddy touched in 4:30.12 – also in the B heat – and Ali Basel swam to a 4:34.35.
In the 200 freestyle, freshman Keely Soellner became the sixth Cyclone in team history to crack the 1:50 mark. Her time of 1:49.84 earned a runner-up finish in the event and helped her join Silqi Luo as the only current Cyclones to swim sub-1:50 in the event. Luo finished third in the B heat with a season-best 1:52.12.
The Cyclones snagged two spots in the A heat of the 100 breaststroke by way of Danica Delaquis and Kasey Roberts. Delaquis swam to a season-best 1:03.61 to take fourth and Roberts touched in 1:03.30 to take the third spot.
Night two ended with the 800 freestyle relay, in which Iowa State's A squad garnered another runner-up finish with a time of 7:27.39. The team of Roberts, Soellner, Emma Ruehle and Luo was responsible for the time, which is No. 8 in team history.
On the day, Iowa State recorded 34 new season-best times and 15 new personal records.
Start times for Nov. 20 – the final day of the Kansas Classic – are scheduled ahead of the first two days of competition. Prelims are set for a 9 a.m. start and finals are scheduled for 2 p.m. at Capitol Federal Natatorium.
Mizzou Invite
Iowa State's divers took to the platform for the first time this season Saturday at the Mizzou Invite.
As she did on the three-meter board two days ago, Julie Dickinson led the way for the Cyclones on the platform to close out the Mizzou Invite. The Clive, Iowa, native scored 196.60 points to take 15th place.
Becky Stochl placed 22nd with 162.80 points and Katherine Mueller notched a score of 135.55.
On deck for the divers is the Jean Freeman Invite, hosted by the University of Minnesota Dec. 2-3 at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center. Prelims are scheduled for 10 a.m. and finals for 6 p.m. both days.
