12.08.2016 | Swimming and Diving
AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State swimmers and divers (1-1-1, 0-0-1 Big 12) are back in action together for the first time in over a month for the 2016 installment of the Iowa Corn CyHawk Series. The dual meet's first splash is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center in Iowa City.
Last Time Out
Iowa State's divers spent last weekend in Minnesota for the Jean Freeman Invitational, at which Julie Dickinson and Katherine Mueller both took home top-15 finishes on the 1-meter board and top-20 finishes on three-meter. Dickinson (315.10) and Mueller (188.60) both notched new personal records on the three-meter board.
The swimmers have been off from competition since the Kansas Classic Nov. 18-20, which saw a myriad of season- and personal-best times set across the board. The Cyclones picked up event wins in the 50 freestyle (Laura Miksch, 23.18) and 200 freestyle relay (1:32.91) en route to a third-place finish, up one spot from last season.
The swimmers and divers have not competed side-by-side in a dual meet since Nov. 4 at TCU, which resulted in a 150-all tie – just the second tie in team history.
Diving Deeper with Iowa
Iowa enters this week's meet on the heels of a fifth-place finish at the Ohio State Invitational Nov. 18-20. On the season, the Hawkeyes own a 3-3 record, including a 1-2 record in the Big Ten. With 14 NCAA 'B' cuts under their belt, the Hawkeyes are off to a strong start.
At the top of Iowa's season-best charts for the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle is freshman Hannah Burvill, who will make an interesting foe for Iowa State's Laura Miksch, who enters the meet undefeated in the 50 freestyle this year. Senior Emma Sougstad remains Iowa's top breaststroke and IM swimmer while also holding the school record in the 100 butterfly.
Underclassmen have stood out for Iowa in the diving well this year as well, with freshman Thelma Baatz-Strandberg owning the team's best scores on both boards. Coming in at No. 2 on the three-meter board is fellow freshman Olivia Dopkiss, who sits in fourth for the Hawkeyes on one-meter.
Keep Your Eye On…
Sougstad, Iowa's Shea Hoyt and Iowa State's trio of breaststroke swimmers, who could make up a field of must-see races Friday night. Megan Childs, Danica Delaquis and Kasey Roberts are all coming off season-best times in the 100 and 200 breaststroke at the Kansas Classic, where they all qualified for scoring heats in the stroke.
On Deck
Iowa State has time off for finals week at school and the holiday season but the team is returning to Ames, packing their bags and jetting off to Puerto Rico from Dec. 30 – Jan. 7 for the annual Winter Training Trip. The Cyclones will do some outdoor training and take in the island before returning home for the start of the spring semester.
The next meet on Iowa State's schedule is a Jan. 14 showdown with the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign, Illinois.
