AMES, Iowa – The 25th annual Iowa State Classic is set to begin as competitors from some of the nation's best men's and women's programs descend on the Harry Hoak Track for one of the country's top indoor track and field competitions.
Both collegiate and professional athletes will by vying for qualifying times and marks for the NCAA Indoor Championships and USA Indoor Championships. A brief preview of each event on the women's side is listed below.
60m
The top two seeds, Nicole Henderson of Ole Miss and Lake Kwaza of Iowa, come into the meet each holding season-bests of 7.41. The Rebels bring a strong sprinting group, as joining Henderson among the top-five seeds are Khadijah Suleman (season-best 7.44) and Shannon Ray (7.50).
200m
Once again, the Ole Miss women highlight the event, with the trio of Henderson, Ray and Suleman making up three of the top four seeds. Another name to keep an eye on is North Dakota State's Morgan Milbrath, with the 2014 Second-Team All-American being the No. 5 seed in the event.
400m
Madison Reynolds of Oral Roberts and Titania Markland of Minnesota are the top seeds, both checking in at No. 25 in the NCAA rankings with 53.91s to their names this season. Former Minnesota All-American Alena Brooks is also in the field, running unattached as the No. 5 seed.
800m
The field is headlined by four-time All-American and two-time NCAA Outdoor 800m runner-up Claudia Saunders of Stanford, who comes into the meet ranked No. 7 in the country this season with a 2:04.43. The top time run this season by a competitor this weekend is Virginia Tech's Hanna Green, with the three-time All-American coming off a 2:04.15 last weekend, which ranks fifth in the NCAA this year.
Mile
This weekend's top seed comes from Notre Dame in senior Danielle Aragon, who currently ranks 27th in the NCAA with a 4:41.86. The Florida Gators enter an impressive group, with three of the top-eight seeds in the event led by Rebekah Greene. The No. 3 seed, Karissa Schweizer of Missouri, prepped at Dowling Catholic in West Des Moines.
3,000m
The field is headlined by a big name in North Dakota State's Erin Teschuk. A three-time All-American, Teschuk ranks second in the NCAA in the mile and holds an indoor 3K PR of 9:02.40. The host Cyclones will look to content in this event, led by No. 4 seed Abby Caldwell.
5,000m
One of the biggest names in college track and field headlines the 5,000m field in Notre Dame's Molly Seidel. The 2015 NCAA Champion in the outdoor 10,000m, Seidel is the defending champion of the ISU Classic 5K, which she recorded a 15:54.45 in last season. Iowa State will again be among the featured competitors, with Perez Rotich and Erin Hooker seeded in the top-seven.
60m Hurdles
The top seed of the hurdles competition is BYU's Alyssa Monteverde-Dalton, who comes into the weekend ranked 26th in the NCAA with her season-best 8.30 from last weekend at New Mexico. The Big Ten is well represented, with Illinois and Minnesota making up the next four seeds in the competition.
4x400 Relay
The highest ranked 4x400 women's relay team in the meet is Iowa, who is No. 19 in the country after a 3:36.99 at the Meyo Invitational last weekend. Minnesota and Ole Miss also bring the talent to put up a strong time. Fans should also watch for the host ISU, as a young quartet which includes freshmen Jasmine Staebler and Emma Whigham will put themselves among the contenders.
High Jump
Kandie Bloch-Jones is the top seed, as the Illinois junior and 2014 All-American in the high jump is one of 17 women nationally to break six-feet this season. She will face strong competition from the Minnesota trio of Heta Tuuri, Sofie Albrechtsen and Taylor Wiebke, with Tuuri leading that group with a 5-10 1/2 this year.
Pole Vault
The tradition of strong pole vaulting at South Dakota will be on displace again as Emily Grove and Madison Mills enter the meet each having cleared 13-11 1/4 this season, tied for 14th in the NCAA. Four of the top six seeds in the women's pole vault compete for the Coyotes. The best clearance this season among competitors in the field is by Ole Miss' Lindsey Murray, who has cleared 14-0 3/4.
Long Jump
Iowa's Jahisha Thomas is the top seed in this event, checking in at No. 23 in the country this year with a jump of 20-4 1/2. Another South Dakota Coyote, Analisa Huschle, will be the No. 2 seed for the event.
Triple Jump
Minnesota freshman Shanique Wright is the top seed in the event, as she ranks No. 31 in the NCAA with a best of 41-8 3/4, which she recorded last weekend. North Carolina's Alexis Gannon is not far behind, as she also posted her season best last weekend with a leap of 41-7 3/4.
Shot Put
The top women's shot putter in the world this indoor season will be in action in the form of Ole Miss' Raven Saunders. The Southern Illinois transfer was the gold medalist in the shot put at the Pan American Junior Championships and the US Junior Outdoor Championships after sweeping the NCAA and Missouri Valley Conference shot put titles as a freshman. Saunders' 62-3 1/4 she threw two weeks ago in Nashville is No. 3 in NCAA history. Not to be outdone, Wisconsin's Kelsey Card is No. 2 in the nation with a best of 58-6 3/4 this season, and will also be in the field.
Weight Throw
It will be another Card vs. Saunders showdown, with Saunders currently No. 9 in the NCAA (68-2 1/4) and Card No. 17 (66-8 3/4). While the Badger is currently behind the Rebel in the NCAA rankings, Card does come in with a better throw to her name in her career, posting a 71-7 1/4 at last year's Iowa State Classic.
