AMES, Iowa - With the indoor track and field season winding down, chances to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships are also narrowing. With the more strategy-based conference championships on the docket for next weekend nationwide, this weekend stands as a last-chance saloon of sorts for qualifying for NCAA Indoors.
The Iowa State men's track and field program will be in action on Saturday looking to make a move up the rankings at the Alex Wilson Invitational, hosted by Notre Dame. The Cyclones are entered in the men's distance medley relay, slated to start at 12:05 p.m., and
Jacob Aune is entered in the men's 800-meter run at 2:30 p.m.
The Cyclones finished third in the distance medley relay at last season's NCAA Indoor Championships, but only one piece of that squad returns this season in
Christian DeLago. The redshirt junior has been strong again, posting personal bests in the 1,000-meter run and mile.
The four other student-athletes competing for spots on the team have their own credentials to bring to the table. Aune has also set a PR in the 1,000 this indoor season, and was not far off his best in the 800m last weekend at the Iowa State Classic.
Daniel Everett currently ranks ninth in the NCAA in the men's 5,000 after his 13:44.90 became the third-best mark in school history.
Deon Sanders earned PRs in the 200 (22.04) and 400 (48.35) last weekend, and
Brandon Wheat went sub-1:50 for the first time in his career in the 800 (1:49.86).
The goal is for the men's DMR squad to find its way into the NCAA top-12, with thhe cutoff time currently being held by UCLA at 9:38.77 heading into this weekend. This will only be the second time Iowa State has run a men's DMR this season, with the Cyclones recorded a 9:57.21 at the Penn State Relays back in January. DeLago, Sanders and Wheat all ran on that team.
Live results will be provided by Delta Timing. Updates on the progress of Iowa State's events will be posted on the Iowa State Track and Field Twitter account,
