AMES, Iowa – Christina Hillman returned to the top of the podium after a nearly two-year absence as she claimed the women's shot put title at day two of the Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Lied Recreation Center.
Hillman led the Iowa State women to a seventh place team finish with 64.42 points. The Iowa State men claimed sixth place with 71 points, buoyed by Daniel Everett's second silver medal in as many days, this one in the 3,000-meter run. Taylor Sanderson also brought home a silver medal in the men's heptathlon, and Jan Jeuschede used an indoor-personal best to earn a silver in the shot put.
The entertainment provided by the women's shot put would be tough to replicate. Hillman was the leader after three throws, with a best toss of 56-8 1/2. Kansas State's Dani Winters, who had defeated Hillman at the Razorback Invitational last month, got ahead with a throw of 56-10 in round four, but the redshirt senior Cyclone bounced back with a toss of 57-6. The same thing happened in round five, as Winters got back ahead with a launch of 57-10 1/4. However, Hillman got the last laugh, as she fired her winning throw of 58-10 to secure her third conference title.
Everett got some more assistance today in the men's 3,000-meter run than he did in the 5,000 last night,, as Brian Llamas and Dan Curts helped carry the load near the front early on. When Everett was left to fend for himself among the highlighter orange uniforms of Oklahoma State, he was outstanding. Everett did well to resist the first charge by the Cowboys, but eventually was passed by Craig Nowak. Vegard Oelstad tried to join his OSU teammate, but Everett battled back to retain second place for the Cyclones.
Sanderson, who retained the day one lead in the heptathlon, was the leader after the first event of the day after going 8.25 in the 60-meter hurdles. While the 13-7 he posted in the pole vault was good for him, he was just eighth among the heptathletes heading to the final event, one of his best in the 1,000-meter run. Sanderson was third among the competitors in a strong 2:45.49, but it was not enough as Thomas Cheval of Oklahoma got in at 2:52.85 and hung on to win the heptathlon by five points, 5,515-to-5,510.
In the men's shot put, Jan Jeuschede was a strong second after three throws, but really stepped up his game at the finish. After dropping to third through the fourth round, the German fired an indoor personal best of 63-2 3/4 (19.26m). He finished with a bang, going 63-3 1/4 (19.28m) on his final throw to secure his silver medal.
