AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State swimming and diving team will take to Beyer Pool one last weekend this season when it hosts Kansas Feb. 5-6 for the Cyclones' regular season finale.
Because the meet is across two days, the event order will be split in half. The first eight events will take place Friday night and the last eight will be the next morning. Friday's competition is set for a 6 p.m. start, while Saturday's will begin at 10 a.m. Admission to both days is free.
Feb. 6 will also serve as Senior Day for the Cyclones. Shortly before the meet begins, Iowa State will honor its senior class for its contributions to the program both in and out of the pool.
The Cyclones' 2016 senior class is comprised of Elyse Brouillette, Marissa Engel, Alex Flatness, Kaylee Kucera, Mollie McNeel and Shahar Silberman.
“It's a very fun class. It's a very diverse class,” head coach Duane Sorenson said of the seniors. “As a group, it's been a very eclectic type of group – they're not just all one person. They're six individuals who have really done a great job both in and out of the pool. They've really come forward this year and been great leaders for the team and great supporters for their teammates.”
Last Time Out
Iowa State (6-4, 2-0 Big 12) enters the weekend on the heels of a thrilling come-from-behind victory on the road over Big 12 foe West Virginia. While the Mountaineers jumped out to an early lead, the Cyclones started picking up momentum in the diving well.
That surge carried over into the racing lanes, where the Cyclones came back to put the meet on the line in the final event: the 200 freestyle relay. Iowa State's 'A' squad of Flatness, Savanna Townsend, Maddie Rastall and Laura Miksch finished .38 seconds ahead of West Virginia's top group to secure the win for the Cyclones, 158-141.
Diving Deeper with Kansas
The Cyclones and Jayhawks caught a glimpse of one another at Kansas's Big Challenge last November, where Iowa State set a myriad of career and season-best times.
Yulduz Kuchkarova leads the Jayhawks in backstroke events, having made NCAA 'B' Standards in both the 100 backstroke (1:55.87) and 200 backstroke (52.62). Kuchkarova also took home the crown in both events at the Big Challenge.
Graylyn Jones in the top diver for the Jayhawks, owning the team's top scores this season in one-meter (263.55) and three-meter (241.72) diving. Nadia Khechfe is close behind Jones, with her top scores a combined 16.35 points off the team leader.
Keep Your Eye On…
The 200 IM, where the top three times between the two teams are separated by .57 seconds. At the Big Challenge, Kasey Roberts and Marissa Engel narrowly missed out on NCAA 'B' Standards in the event, clocking in at 2:01.62 and 2:01.75, respectfully. Kansas' Chelsie Miller has the Jayhawks' top time on the season, touching in 2:01.18 in December.
On Deck
The Cyclones have a little more than two weeks off before heading south to Austin, Texas, for the 2016 Big 12 Championships Feb. 24-27. Iowa State will be seeking consecutive top-two finishes at the conference championship meet for the first time since Iowa State began competing at its conference championship in the mid-1970s.
