TUCSON, Arizona – Iowa State's All-American decathlete Taylor Sanderson had the best day one of his decathlon career Thursday afternoon at the Jim Click Combined Events, hosted by the University of Arizona. The Bondurant native sits second in the men's decathlon competition at the halfway point, having amassed 3,918 points so far.
He is being joined by Wyatt Rhoads in the decathlon competition, while the Iowa State women were represented by Kaci Storm and Emma Whigham in the heptathlon competition.
Sanderson started day one in a big way, taking advantage of a favorable win to cross the line first in the 100-meter dash in a wind-aided 10.94. It was the first time in his career Sanderson has broken 11 seconds in the 100-meter dash in any wind conditions. Sanderson followed that up with a solid second-place effort in the long jump at 22-10 1/2.
The All-American Sanderson finished the day with another win, taking first in the 400-meter dash in 49.91. Not to be out-done, his Cyclone teammate Wyatt Rhoads came in second in the 400-meter dash in 50.31. Rhoads is competing in his first career decathlon.
In the women's heptathlon competition, both Kaci Storm and Emma Whigham had event performances they can be satisfied with heading into the final day of competition on Friday. Starting the day with the 100m hurdles, Storm finished fifth among the competitors with a 14.52, only a couple of tenths of her personal best.
Whigham wrapped up day one on a strong note, taking advantage of a 2.6 wind to cruise to a victory in the 200-meter dash in 24.19. Storm was also good there, recording the sixth-fastest time in 25.30, also wind-aided at 2.6.
