LAWRENCE, Kansas – Iowa State added two more entries to its NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships collection Saturday at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships West Preliminaries. Jhoanmy Luque earned her second NCAA bid in as many days with a third-place finish in the women's triple jump, while Christina Hillman earned her fourth-straight trip to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the women's shot put.
Iowa State will have five entries at the NCAA Outdoor Championships June 8-11 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon. Luque will be in the women's long jump and triple jump, Hillman in the women's shot put, Derek Jones in the men's 400-meter hurdles and Taylor Sanderson in the decathlon.
Less than 24 hours after advancing to Eugene in the long jump, Luque had gotten the business of securing qualification in the triple jump secured on her first jump of 42-5 1/4. However, that was not enough for Luque as she put together a big personal best of 43-3 3/4 on her second leap to move into first place. To prove that it was not a fluke, she did it again on her final jump with another 43-3 3/4. This marks the Venezuelan's first trip to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the triple jump.
Hillman wasted zero time securing her fourth-straight trip to the NCAA Outdoor Championships. The redshirt senior, who was second to go in her flight, fired her first throw 55-11 1/4 to attain the early lead. Though she eventually slipped to final position of third, the result was in no doubt after that first throw. The six-time All-American and two-time national champion in the shot put will get one more chance to don the Cardinal and Gold, and add to her trophy collection.
With the end of seasons come end of careers, and two outstanding ones concluded in Jan Jeuschede and Daniel Everett. Jeuschede was in search of his third-straight trip to the Outdoor Championships in the shot put, but was only able to get in one legal throw and finished 18th at 60-0 1/2. The German finishes his ISU career as a three-time All-American and the 2016 Big 12 Outdoor Champion in the shot put.
Everett only had one season in Ames, but the graduate transfer from Columbia made the most of it. Everett finished 21st in the men's 5,000-meter run today in 14:27.31. In his one season at ISU, Everett earned three silver medals at the Big 12 Championships, and qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships in the 5,000-meter run to earn Second Team All-America honors.
