AMES, Iowa – Iowa State track and field will be represented by six freshman student-athletest this weekend at the 2016 USATF Junior Outdoor Championships at Veteran's Memorial Stadium in Clovis, California. Action will take place on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with the ISU athletes competing for not just junior national titles, but the opportunity to compete at the IAAF World U-20 Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland in July.
Iowa State will have Jasmine Staebler taking part in the women's 800-meter run prelims at 6:55 p.m. Central Time on Friday, with John Nownes and Thomas Pollard doing the men's 10,000 at 10:25 p.m.
Saturday will see Emma Whigham begin the heptathlon at 4:30 p.m., doing the 100m hurdles, high jump, shot put and 200-meter dash on day one. Should Staebler make the 800-meter run final, it will be Saturday at 9 p.m. Also representing the Cyclone women on Saturday will be Grace Gibbons and Kelly Naumann in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at 9:45 p.m. Nownes and Pollard will close the evening in the 5,000-meter run at 10:15 p.m.
Whigham will close out her heptathlon on Sunday, starting at 5:45 p.m. with the long jump, javelin and 800-meter run.
The top-two finishers in each event with the IAAF World U-20 Championship qualifying standard will represent the United States in Poland July 19-24. Among the Cyclones competing, Naumann, Nownes (10,000), Pollard (10,000) and Staebler have already attained the championship qualifying standard.
The Cyclone women in action this weekend are all coming off outstanding freshmen seasons at Iowa State. Naumann and Staebler both advanced to the NCAA West Preliminaries in their respective events. Naumann earned a bronze medal in the steeplechase at the Big 12 Championships, while Staebler made her way into ISU's all-time top-10 in the 800 both indoors and outdoors. Gibbons and Whigham took some time to find their strongest events, but finished strongly with Whigham taking sixth in the heptathlon at the Big 12 Championships and Gibbons running a personal best 10:52.45 in the steeplechase at the conference championships.
Nownes and Pollard redshirted their track and field seasons, but were not kept out of action. Both went and ran at the USATF Junior Cross Country Championship, with Pollard winning and Nownes taking ninth. Pollard went to represent Team USA at the Panamerican Cross Country Cup in Venezuela, earning the individual silver medal and leading Team USA to gold in the team competition.
The duo returned to the track running unattached at the Drake Relays in the men's 10,000, where both comfortably ran their qualifying times for this weekend's meet.
