AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State swimming and diving team returns to competition Jan. 14 after more than a month since its last dual meet. The Cyclones will be traveling to Urbana-Champaign, Illinois, for an 11 a.m. showdown with the University of Illinois at ARC Pool.
Last Time Out
The Cyclones (1-2-1, 0-0-1 Big 12) are coming off their mid-season break, which included Winter Training Trip to Puerto Rico, where the team had morning and night practices daily for a week. Iowa State has not competed since a Dec. 9, 2016, loss at Iowa.
The meet against Iowa was not without bright spots, however, as Cyclones across the board posted season-best and personal-best times, highlighted by freshman Keely Soellner. Soellner's time of 9:56.76 in the 1000 freestyle made her the first Cyclone woman to ever break the 10-minute mark in the event and set a new Iowa State record by more than six seconds.
Also included in the 11 personal records set at the meet was Danica Delaquis' race in the 200 breaststroke, which she finished in 2:15.55 to earn the first NCAA 'B' cut of her career.
Diving Deeper with Illinois
This season marks the fifth-straight in which the Cyclones and Illini will face off. In last year's matchup, Illinois escaped Beyer Pool with a 164.5-135.5 victory that came down to the final event of the meet.
Illinois holds a 6-2 record in dual meets this season heading into the weekend. That record will change by the time the Cyclones take the pool, as the meet will mark Illinois' third meet in as many days. Illinois also faces Iowa and Notre Dame during the three-day stretch.
On Deck
Illinois marks the first of a four-weekend stretch in which the Cyclones will compete in a dual meet. Up next, Iowa State will host Big 12 foe West Virginia for its first home meet since the season-opener. That clash is set for an 11:00 a.m. start at Beyer Pool and admission will be free.
