IOWA CITY, Iowa – Iowa State's track and field's men's 4x400-meter relay team's victory capped off an exciting weekend for the Cyclones at the Larry Wieczorek Invitational at the UI Recreation Building. ISU picked up three victories on the day to get up to eight on the weekend. In the team competition, Iowa State finished second on the women's side with 123 points, and third in the men's division with 112 points. Hosts Iowa won both team titles.
The Cyclones showed good potential for the season in the 4x400 last weekend in Iowa City with a second-place finish in the relay. They took another step on Saturday, taking a second off last weekend's time. Eric Fogltanz had to lead-off from the outside lane, and did well to get down to the inside with the lead at the first exchange. Ben Kelly gave up the lead early in his run, but did well to close the gap to Iowa to be neck-and-neck on the third exchange. The baton went to Roshon Roomes next, who was able to get back ahead marginally at the final exchange. Jaymes Dennison left no doubt to the result as he dominated, and pulled away to the winning time of 3:09.30.
The time, a UI Recreation Building facility record, makes the quartet the fifth-fastest team in school history. The group finished the weekend ranking 11th in Division I in the 4x400-meter relay.
ISU's other victory on the men's side came in the Larry Wieczorek Mile by Toby Hardwick, who crossed first in 4:12.84. Hardwick took control of the field with 600 meters to go, and was able to hold off a late charge from Florida State's Michael Hall to get the victory.
In the men's 60-meter hurdles, Logan Schneider and Elijah Young each got personal bests in the prelims, with Schneider going 8.06 and Young going 8.12. In the final, Schneider got third in 8.07, while Young came in fourth by matching his 8.12 from the prelim.
On the women's side, Evelyne Guay opened her indoor season with a victory in the 800-meter premier, crossing the line in 2:09.82 via a last-lap pass of UNI's Ashley Norem. Jasmine Staebler's second-place effort of 55.74 in the 400-meter dash put her in sixth in Iowa State history in the event. Tasha Frazier took fifth in the 60-meter hurdles in 8.62, a time that moves her to fourth in ISU history in the event.
