LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Iowa State kicked off action at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational on Friday. After day one, three Cyclones advanced to day two. Redshirt freshmen Kanen Storr and Jarrett Degen qualified for the second day at 141 and 149 pounds, while Marcus Harrington battled to reach day two at heavyweight.
Storr, who is seeded No. 8 in his bracket, rolled to the quarterfinals. He opened with a 6-2 victory over American's Kizhan Clarke and followed that up with a 7-1 victory over Central Michigan's ninth-seeded Mason Smith.
In the quarterfinals, Storr was pitted against No. 1 seed, Bryce Meredith. After an early scramble and a takedown, Meredith turned Storr to his back, pinning him in 2:04. Tomorrow, Storr will face Purdue's Nate Limmex for a shot at the podium.
At 149 pounds, Degen is the No. 10 seed in his bracket. He opened the tournament with a dominating 17-2 technical fall against Western Wyoming's Denny Astle, but was sent to the backside of the bracket by Zander Wick of Wisconsin in the second round.
Degen pieced together two back-side victories to remain alive. He was patient against Columbia's Jacob Macalolooy, pinning him in 6:23. His final match of the night was action-packed, and a late reversal and four-point near fall pushed Degen past NDSU's Kyle Gliva by 11-7 decision. His first match of the day tomorrow will be Michael Sprague from American.
Harrington is unseeded at heavyweight this weekend. He started this morning with an emphatic 11-1 major decision over Matt Wagner of Air Force. Columbia's No. 6 Garrett Ryan got the better of Harrington in the second round, defeating him by 8-2 decision.
On the consolation side of the heavyweight bracket, Harrington strung together two gritty 3-2 victories. The first avenged a loss from earlier this year, with Harrington knocking off UNI's Carter Isley. Following that, he topped Utah Valley's No. 9 Dustin Dennison in the final match of the night. Harrington's first match tomorrow will be a battle with Purdue's Shawn Streck.
