AMES, Iowa – The annual Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk series continues this Friday, Dec. 8 in Beyer Hall at 6 p.m. Iowa State (3-1, 1-0 Big 12) comes into the meet against rival Iowa (2-2, 1-2 Big Ten) looking for their first Cy-Hawk victory since 2009. Admission is free to the Cy-Hawk dual.
LAST TIME – Kansas Classic/Mizzou Invite
The Cyclones should be well rested coming into Friday's dual meet against the Hawkeyes, having last competed just under three weeks ago. In both competitions, Iowa State saw members of the team step up and perform on a large stage. During the Kansas Classic, Mary Kate Luddy led the Cyclones in individual points scored with 45. Her runner-up performances in the 500 free and 100 fly highlighted her swims during the event, while also swimming four relays.
In the Mizzou Invite, Dana Liva qualified for the finals in all three disciplines. Her overall consistency, highlighted by scoring a 253.20, was good enough for fourth-place in the competition. The score also placed among the best Cyclone platform divers, placing her third on Iowa State's all-time performers list.
THE OPPONENT – Iowa Hawkeyes
It should come as no surprise the importance this meet carries for both squads. The Hawkeyes come into Friday's dual having already taken down Northern Iowa and Michigan State, but fell to a pair of ranked teams in Minnesota and Purdue. The Hawkeye women also participated in the Jean Freeman Classic in Minneapolis, taking second overall with 1128.5 points.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR – Breaststroke
The duo of Danica Delaquis and Martha Haas have been competitive all season, finishing top-three in the majority of breaststroke events this year. They will look to continue their strong seasons and help Iowa State gain crucial points in breaststroke events.
ON DECK – Winter Training Trip
Over the winter break, the Cyclone swimming and diving teams will split up for some dedicated training time in a new location. The swimmers will head to Lauderdale-By-The-Sea, Florida, while the divers head north to Thunder Bay, Ontario in Canada to train.
Following the university break, the Cyclones head to Cedar Falls for a matchup with in-state opponent Northern Iowa. That meet will take place on Jan. 13 at 1 p.m.
