DES MOINES, Iowa – Iowa State wrapped up competition on another cold and rainy Saturday at the Drake Relays. The Cyclones had many highlights on the day, led by Jhoanmy Luque having a big day in the triple jump, a good day for Jalen Ford in the high jump and some strong performances by the women's distance squad.
A day after picking up her first career Drake Relays victory flag, Jhoanmy Luque was at it again in the rain and cold Saturday morning. It was looking risky after a pair of fouls to start the competition. She regained her composure and posted a third-jump clearance of 43-0 1/2 to move into second. She did not improve on her mark from there, but she was the top-finishing collegian, only finishing behind professional Tori Franklin, so she will be forever credited with the university/college division victory in the event.
Jalen Ford had a strong day in the high jump, which was indoors at the Drake Fieldhouse, finishing in third place for the competition. The junior started the day with a pair of flawless clearances before tying his career-high at 6-11 1/2 on his second effort. The bar was raised to 7-1, and despite a pair of valiant efforts, he was unable to get above seven feet for the first time in his ISU career. Ford's previous clearance of 6-11 1/2 came at the NCAA West Preliminaries last season.
The Cyclones' women's DMR team of Evelyne Guay, Emma Whigham, Jasmine Staebler and Erinn Stenman-Fahey had another strong performance on Saturday, as the quartet came home third in 11:28.90. The time puts them at No. 7 in ISU history in the distance medley relay. Stenman-Fahey got the stick in second, but fell back to fifth in a tight battle in the middle of the pack. However, the Canadian was able to rally and get the Cyclones back into third place.
Kelly Naumann started ISU's day on the blue oval with a bang, as she came home fifth in a new personal best time of 10:21.45. Her mark, taking three seconds off her previous best from the Stanford Invitational last month, moves her ahead of teammate Grace Gibbons for No. 2 in Iowa State history in the steeplechase.
