AUSTIN, Texas – Iowa State's travel list for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships increased by one Friday night at the NCAA West Preliminaries as Jasmine Staebler secured her trip to Eugene, Oregon in the women's 800-meter run. The sophomore qualified for her first career NCAA Outdoor Championships, and completed her season sweep to go with her trip to the NCAA Indoors in the 800 back in March.
The pressure went up on Jasmine Staebler within the first 200 meters of her 800 heat as a slow pace ensured no time qualifiers would come out of heat three. Like yesterday, Staebler kept on the back shoulder of defending NCAA Champion Raevyn Rogers, and when Rogers picked up the pace with 250 meters to go, Staebler followed, getting across the line in second place in 2:07.58, enough to send her to Eugene and the NCAA Outdoor Championships. The Cyclone sophomore completed the indoor-outdoor sweep for making the NCAA Championships.
In the men's 400 hurdles, Derek Jones ran to one of the best times of his career, with his 51.08 being the second-fastest time of his career and best since 2014. However, the competition was too much as Jones finished seventh in his heat and 15th overall, missing out on a chance to advance to Eugene for a second-straight season. Jones closed out an outstanding career as a Cyclone, a 2016 Honorable Mention All-American in the 400 hurdles, a scorer for Iowa State in all eight Big 12 Championships he participated in and a three-time Academic All-Big 12 First Team honoree.
Roshon Roomes completed an outstanding freshman season for the Cyclones on Friday night, as a fall on the first lap of his race resulted in him finishing 23rd in the men's 800-meter run in 1:57.95. Roomes qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships as part of the 4x400-meter relay, and won a bronze medal outdoors in the 800-meter run.
Unfortunately for Kelly Naumann, her season also ended on a sour note as she was tripped up at the water barrier on each of the first two laps of the 3,000-meter steeplechase, leading to her taking a DNF. Naumann finishes her sophomore season ranked No. 2 in ISU history in the steeplechase with her 10:21.45 at the Drake Relays in April.
