TOPEKA, Kan. – The Iowa State swimming and diving team (3-2, 1-0 Big 12) will split up this weekend with the swimmers headed to the Kansas Classic in Topeka and the divers traveling to Iowa City for the Hawkeye Invitational. The Kansas Classic will pit the Cyclones against Arkansas-Little Rock, Kansas, North Texas, Northern Iowa and Omaha. The Iowa State divers will face off with 14 dive squads starting Thursday morning, while the swimmers begin on Friday.
THE EVENT – Kansas Classic
Iowa State is coming off of a third-place finish at last year's event. Haley Ruegemer was named to the All-Invite team at the conclusion of last year's competition, and will look to be a main contributor in 2018. Keely Soellner and Martha Haas were unable to compete for the majority of the 2017 Kansas Classic, so Iowa State will look to reap the benefits from their performances this weekend.
The Cyclone freshmen will get their first taste of a championship-style meet this weekend. Freshmen have combined for 13 events wins this season, and the Cyclones will rely on their young swimmers throughout the Kansas Classic. The event will also allow for some younger swimmers to exhibit their skillset in a variety of events.
THE EVENT – Hawkeye Invitational
With the swim team in Topeka, the divers head to Iowa City to dive in the Iowa Invitational. School-record holder Dana Liva has already qualified for Zones on the springboards and will have her first chance to qualify in the platform event on Saturday. Sydney Ronald will also have a good opportunity to earn a Zone-qualifying mark throughout the invitational. Alex Aaberg scored on the platform at the 2018 Big 12 Championship meet, and freshman Jessica Coffin will compete in a championship-style meet for the first time in her career, giving the Cyclones plenty to look forward to in the competition.
ON DECK – Iowa
Iowa State will follow their championship-style meet with a trip to Iowa City for the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series. The Cyclones are looking for their first win in the series since 2009.
