Upcoming Event: Swimming and Diving versus Cardinal & Gold on October 3, 2025 at 5:00 PM

12.06.2018 | Swimming and Diving
IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Iowa State swimming and diving team (3-2, 1-0 Big 12) is set to square off with in-state rival Iowa (3-2, 1-2 Big Ten) in the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series. The Cyclones will look to use their momentum following their second-place finish at the Kansas Classic to compete with the Hawkeyes.
THE OPPONENT – Iowa Hawkeyes
In last year's contest, the Hawkeyes defeated the Cyclones 172.5-127.5 at Beyer Pool. Iowa State was powered by a strong breaststroke group, earning three of the top-four spots in both events. Martha Haas and Laura Miksch played a key role, each winning an event in the loss, but winning some of these events this year will prove to be more difficult. Iowa's Hannah Burvill has already posted 'B' cut times in the 50 and 500 free, and no matter the events she swims, the Cyclones in competition against her will need their best swims to beat her.
This year will mark the 34th Cy-Hawk matchup, Iowa holding a 29-14 edge all-time. Last year's 47-point loss was the closest since 2013, where the Cyclones fell by 30. Iowa State has narrowed the deficit in each of the last four seasons, and is looking to win their first dual meet against Iowa since 2009. Iowa has yet to win at the Campus and Recreation Wellness Center, while all three of the Cyclones' wins came on the road.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR – Breaststroke
Cyclone breaststrokes claimed three of the top four spots in the each of the breaststroke event in last year's affair. Without the senior leadership this year, Haas, Lehr Thorson and Bryn Ericksen will look to earn crucial victories. Haas and Thorson are coming off top-five finishes in the breaststroke at the Kansas Classic, and another solid performance from the sophomores will keep Iowa State neck-and-neck with Iowa.
ON DECK – Winter Training Trip
The Cy-Hawk dual marks the final competition for 2018, but the team will split up, the swimmers heading to Florida and the divers off to Georgia, for their annual training trips in late December. The trip gives the team an opportunity to train in new environments and continue to prepare for the second half of the season. The Cyclones will return to action on Jan. 11 with a trip to Omaha, followed by a home meet on Jan. 12 against Northern Iowa.
