LINCOLN, Nebraska – Iowa State track and field wrapped up its weekend of competition at the Husker Invitational in Nebraska, and at the Bruce Lehane Scarlet and White Invitational in Boston.
The ISU day was highlighted by another strong jumping performance by Jhoanmy Luque, and a career-best day from Wyatt Rhoads in the heptathlon.
Husker Invitational
Jhoanmy Luque put up another solid effort in the sand pits on Saturday. The senior finished second in the women's triple jump, recording a mark of 42-6 3/4 (12.97m) on her third jump. The Venezuelan had the lead after one round, but Nebraska's Angela Mercurio countered with a 43-0 1/4 (13.11m) in round two. Luque did not foul on any of her efforts, but was unable to reel the Husker back in.
Wyatt Rhoads once again posted his best career heptathlon score, as the junior finished 10th with a score of 4,846 points. His 85-point improvement from two weeks ago in Iowa City can be credited to his work in the pole vault. Rhoads has been stuck on 13-1 1/2 for close to a year, but made a huge jump today with a best effort of 13-8 1/4 (4.17m).
On the track, Ka'ven Berry continued his progress in the 600-meter run, picking up a heat win and finishing fifth overall in a personal-best mark of 1:20.83.
Bruce Lehane Scarlet and White Invitational
Zach Black led the Iowa State effort in Boston, finishing third in the men's 1,000 with a time of 2:27.35.
Edwin Kurgat's second meet as a Cyclone saw him finish fifth in the mile, taking third in the fast section of the competition at the BU Track and Tennis Center. The UT-Martin transfer clocked a time of 4:06.05 on the afternoon.
