MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The Iowa State tennis team (8-10, 0-3 Big 12) lost 4-1 against the West Virginia Mountaineers Saturday at the Summit Tennis Academy.
Duo Maty Cancini and Regina Espindola kicked off doubles action with a 6-3 win against Mountaineers Christina Jordan and Sofia Duran. No. 2 and 3 Cyclone doubles pairings both participated in close tiebreaking matches.
At No. 2 doubles, Annabella Bonadonna and Erin Freeman played Paula Goetz and Lyn Yuen Choo, but fell 7-6, 10-8. Margarita Timakova and Ekaterina Repina, who played as the No. 3 doubles pairing, fell 7-6, 7-5 to West Virginia's Giovanna Caputo and Anne-Sophie Courteau.
In singles action, Repina picked up the only point for Iowa State. Playing at No. 4 singles, she defeated Duran, 6-4, 6-4.
Although Espindola fell 6-0 to Courteau in the first set, she was able to bounce back with a 6-3 win in the second. In the third, Espindola fell, 6-3, giving another singles point to the Mountaineers. Cancini's singles match versus Jordan also went into three sets. Although she grabbed a 6-3 win in the second set, Courteau's 6-0 and 6-3 victories in the first and third sets gave West Virginia another point.
Freeman struggled against Choo at the No. 3 singles spot, falling 6-1, 6-0. Timakova and Bonadonna's matches went unfinished. Timakova, who played at No. 5, went 1-6, 4-5, unfinished versus Goetz, while Bonadonna went 3-4, unfinished against Caputo at the No. 6 singles position.
Next up for ISU is an away match against the Drake Bulldogs on Thursday, March 29 at 5 p.m.
