WACO, Texas – The Iowa State tennis team (9-14, 0-7 Big 12) fell 6-1 to the No. 25 Baylor Bears at the Hurd Tennis Center on Sunday.
The Cyclones gained momentum early by securing the doubles point. Ekaterina Repina and Margarita Timakova picked up a 6-3 victory over Bears' 80th-ranked duo of Jessica Hinojosa and Kristina Sorokolet. Meanwhile, No. 1 doubles duo Maty Cancini and Regina Espindola gave ISU the doubles point as they edged Theresa Van Zyl and Giorgia Testa, 7-5.
The Bears captured their first point as Alvarez lost her match to Testa, 6-2, 6-0. Espindola also dropped her match at No. 2 singles, falling to Abbate, 6-2, 6-2. Iowa State gave up another point when Timakova, who played at the No. 4 singles spot, lost to Sorokolet, 6-4, 6-0. The Bears secured their fourth point as Bonadonna fell, 7-5, 6-1, to Sujova at the No. 5 spot. Cancini won the first set in her match against Van Zyl at No. 1 singles, but fell 6-1 and 6-2 in the second and third sets respectively. Repina, who played at the No. 3 spot, won the first set against Hinojosa, 7-5, but fell 6-4 in the second and 10-6 in the third.
The Cyclones will conclude their regular season with a pair of home matches next weekend. On Friday, April 20, the Cyclones will host TCU at 3 p.m., followed by a meeting with Texas Tech on Sunday, April 22 at 10 a.m. Both matches will take place at the Life Time Fitness in Urbandale, Iowa.
