DES MOINES, Iowa – It was a historic day for Iowa State at the Drake Relays Friday night at Drake Stadium. The Cyclones picked up three victory flags, sweeping the men's and women's 4x800-meter relays and with
Jhoanmy Luque winning the women's long jump.
Iowa State is the first program to sweep the men's and women's 4x800-meter relays since Missouri did so in 2000. Iowa State was the first program to do the sweep in 1979. The Cyclone mens' 4x800 win is the first time the Cyclones have won a Drake Relays relay title since taking the 2007 Sprint Hurdle Relay.
The men's race was full of drama with the second-straight showdown between Iowa State and Iowa, with Missouri joining the battle this year. Iowa State led at each of the relay exchanges by
Festus Lagat,
Roshon Roomes and
Frank Hayes, but both Missouri and Iowa grabbed the lead in the final lap, but
Jaymes Dennison sealed the deal in the final 200, pulling away to take the win in 7:27.98, the No. 7 mark in ISU history.
In the women's 4x800,
Evelyne Guay and
Erinn Stenman-Fahey had the Cyclones in a three-horse race with Ohio State and Utah. It was the final two legs that made the difference, as
Larkin Chapman pushed ISU ahead in the front-stretch heading to the final exchange, with
Jasmine Staebler pulling away to get the win in 8:36.51, the No. 2 mark in program history.
It was not the smoothest day for Luque, as she started her afternoon with two-straight fouls, forcing her into a conservative 19-2 (5.84m) jump to ensure her advancement. She picked it up after that, jumping to second on her fourth effort of 19-11 (6.07m), taking the lead with her fifth leap of 20-5 1/4 (6.23m) and closing out the competition with her season-best 20-11 1/4 (6.38m) to get the win. Luque is now a three-time Drake Relays champion, and will look to add a fourth tomorrow in the triple jump.
In the women's 4x1,600-meter relay, the Cyclones were in fourth heading into the third leg, when
Cailie Logue took over the race. The freshman carried ISU into second and onto the shoulder of leaders Kansas State. While the Wildcats pulled away for the win,
Karly Ackley was able to hold off Minnesota to keep ISU in second at 19:26.25, making them the fifth-fastest 4x1,600 team in school history.
