Luque Earns Big 12 Long Jump Title, No. 6 of Career

WACO, Texas – Jhoanmy Luque clinched her sixth career Big 12 track and field title on Saturday, this most recent one coming in the women's long jump at the Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Luque is now a six-time Big 12 champion, with today's being her first outdoor long jump title, and her third long jump conference crown overall when adding in her two indoor titles. The Venezuelan's winning leap of 21-3 1/2 (6.49m) is her season-best and moves her up to No. 10 in Division I this season at the time of publication.

Luque's victory took Iowa State to 30 team points through the first two days of competition, putting ISU fifth in the team standings. The Cyclone men are in eighth with 12 team points, but had a strong day on Saturday, with all eight prelim runs advancing to Sunday's finals. They will join ISU's 4x100 and 4x400m relay entries and the five 5,000m entries the Cyclones have tomorrow.

Luque's win on Saturday was as routine as it could get. She took the lead on her first effort, a season-best mark of 21-3 1/2 (6.49m) and never looked back from there. Luque's third jump was 21-2 (6.45m), and with the final spot of each round secured, she was able to pass on her final three jumps, saving her energy for tomorrow's triple jump competition.

On the track, the Iowa State men advanced all eight of their running prelims entries to the finals. In the 110m hurdles, Logan Schneider (14.06) and Elijah Young (14.14) both posted personal bests to advance to tomorrow's final. In the 400m hurdles, Eric Fogltanz also recorded a personal best in 51.24. Festus Lagat will be the top seed in the men's 1,500 final (3:46.66), with Zach Black joining him (3:52.42). All three of ISU's men's 800 entries advanced to Sunday's final in Jaymes Dennison (1:51.76), Roshon Roomes (1:51.96) and Frank Hayes (1:52.15).

In the women's running prelims, Jasmine Staebler will be the top seed in the 800m run final on Sunday, recording a time of 2:06.58 to win her heat. Erinn Stenman-Fahey, who went 2:07.54 in her prelim, will join Steabler in the 800 final. Karly Ackley will represent ISU in the women's 1,500 final, with the freshman going 4:27.05 in her prelim on Saturday.
