AMES, Iowa – A total of 24 Iowa State track and field student-athletes were named to the 2018 Academic All-Big 12 Track and Field Teams, the conference announced Wednesday. The Cyclones had 11 men and 13 women named to the 2018 squad.
The Cyclone women had 11 First Team members and two Second Team honorees. The ISU women were led by a quartet who were nominated with 4.0 GPAs in recent Iowa State grads
Evelyne Guay and
Tessa Krempel, along with
Kelly Naumann and
Jasmine Staebler.
The other ISU women to make the First Team were
Abby Caldwell,
Larkin Chapman,
Anne Frisbie,
Megan Schott,
Erinn Stenman-Fahey,
Emma Whigham (a repeat honoree) and
Gwynne Wright. Second Team honorees were
Jhoanmy Luque and
Christabel Okeke.
The Cyclone men saw
Chris Celona named Academic All-Big 12 First Team for the second-straight year, while
Wyatt Rhoads got a promotion to the First Team after being a Second Team honoree in 2017. Other First Team honorees for the ISU men were
Zach Black,
Sam Clausnitzer,
Chandler Diercks,
Eric Fogltanz,
Andrew Jordan,
John Nownes and
Zach Timm.
Roshon Roomes made the Academic All-Big 12 Second Team.
First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, while the second team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.0 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 20 percent of their team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
Iowa State begins the Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Baylor on Friday.
