AMES, Iowa – After outstanding freshmen seasons, four Iowa State women will look to earn the chance to represent Team USA this weekend at the 2018 USATF Junior Outdoor Championships, hosted at Indiana University's Haugh Track & Field Complex.
While aiming for junior division national championships, the quartet will also be competing for spots on the Team USA U20 World Championships team, which will compete in Tampere, Finland at the IAAF U20 World Championships in July.
The Cyclones will be represented by
Karly Ackley (1,500m Run),
Essence Henderson (Discus, Shot Put)
Cailie Logue (3,000m and 5,000m Run) and
Amanda Vestri (3,000m and 5,000m Run). Competition begins on Friday, and will continue through Sunday. A full schedule for ISU's student-athletes is at the bottom of the article.
All live video will be provided via USATF.TV via a USATF.TV +PLUS subscription, which can also be accessed through a RunnerSpace subscription. For more information, click here.
All four Cyclones are coming off freshman years that saw them advance to the NCAA West Preliminaries during the outdoor season. Logue redshirted during the indoor season, but came back during outdoor season to earn a Big 12 silver medal at 5,000 meters and become the seventh Cyclone in program history to go below 16 minutes in the 5K. Vestri earned bronze medals in the 5K indoors and 10K outdoors, while Ackley was a bronze medalist at 3,000 meters indoors. Henderson is in ISU's all-time top-five in both the discus and the shot put.
The Cyclones have a history of advancing student-athletes to the U20 World Championships. Two years ago,
Kelly Naumann (women's 3,000-meter steeplechase) and
Thomas Pollard (men's 10,000-meter run) both went on to represent Team USA at the U20 World Championships.
All of Iowa State's entries this weekend have already achieved the U20 World Championships qualifying standard. The top-three finishers in each event this weekend will be considered for the team, with Team USA getting two entries in each event at the World Championships.
