Timakova, Williams Win Titles As Cyclones Wrap Up Play At Gopher Invite

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Iowa State junior Margarita Timakova won a three-set thriller to earn the championship in her flight Sunday afternoon at the Gopher Invitational. Timakova's freshman teammate Savannah Williams also won her flight with her Sunday win.

Timakova rallied for a hard fought 4-6, 7-5, 7-5 win against Minnesota's Kalyssa Hall in Flight E to claim the title. Timakova rolled past an opponent from Drake and a pair of Golden Gophers to win her bracket.

Williams completed an unbeaten weekend with a 6-1, 6-2 victory against UNI's Morganne Borsch to win Flight H. She lost just one game in singles play the entire weekend in her first collegiate competition. In both singles and doubles play combined, Williams posted a 9-1 record.

The duo of Williams and Karen Alvarez swept its doubles matches on Sunday, beating UNI's Claudia Toledo and Morganne Borsh, 6-3, in the finals.

Iowa State returns to action next weekend at the Hokie Fall Invite in Blacksburg, Virginia. Play starts Friday.
