AMES, Iowa – Iowa State swimming and diving (5-3, 1-0 Big 12) is set to dual the Illinois State Redbirds (5-2, 1-1 MVC) on Friday night. The meet is set to begin at 5 p.m. at Beyer Pool. This is the first meeting between the Cyclones and Redbirds since 2009, in which Iowa State won on the road 128-115.
THE OPPONENT – Illinois State Redbirds
Illinois State only has two blemishes on their 2018-19 record, defeated by Indiana State and Illinois. The lone common opponent between the Cyclones and Redbirds, Omaha, was defeated by over 90 points in both meets. Iowa State holds a 16-8 record against Illinois State all-time, the fourth-most victories against a single opponent. This will be the Redbirds' first trip to Beyer Pool since 2006.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR – Distance
The Cyclone distance team won three-of-four events in their meets last weekend. Lucia Rizzo touched over 10 seconds faster than any Omaha swimmer in the 1000 free, while Haley Ruegemer earned her first two dual wins of the season with a pair of 500 free wins. Polina Shynkarenko set a new season-best time in the 1000 free against Omaha, one-of-three runner-up finishes on the weekend for the junior. With depth in the events from Kami Pankratz and Kat Jones, the distance team is primed for a big night against Illinois State.
ON DECK – West Virginia
Iowa State hosts the West Virginia Mountaineers on Jan. 26 at 11 a.m. The meet will serve as Senior Day for the Cyclones, as the team wraps up the regular season on the road at Kansas.
