LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Iowa State swimming and diving team (7-3, 2-0 Big 12) faces off with the Kansas Jayhawks (6-1, 1-0 Big 12) in their final meet before the Big 12 Championships. The meet is split up into two days, Friday's event going through the 50 free, including platform and one-meter diving. Saturday's events will begin with the 100 free, with two rounds of three-meter action.
THE OPPONENT – Kansas Jayhawks
The Jayhawks have had a solid season to date. They claimed wins against TCU and Nebraska, while also taking first at the Kansas Classic. Iowa State last knocked off Kansas back in 2013-14, a 163.5-136.5 victory in Beyer Pool.
At the Kansas Classic, the Cyclones matched up well with the Jayhawks in numerous events. The sprint free team, led by Elynn Tan and Anna Andersen, touched with similar times to the top Kansas swimmers. The 100 fly and 100 breast teams also had close finishes. Most notably, the final event of the Saturday's events, the 400 freestyle relay, had just 0.23 between the two squads last November. If the meet comes down to the final relay, every stroke will count in winning the dual meet.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR – Breaststroke
Sophomore Martha Haas has found her groove in the water. Her 100 breast time against Illinois State was by far the fastest in-season time of her career, and another swim like that should put her in the running to win the event against Kansas. Lehr Thorson currently holds the Cyclones' fastest 100 breast time of the season, and she should be competing with Haas and the Kansas swimmers for the lead. Bryn Ericksen has also scored in five of her last six swims, and those points could be crucial for a Cyclone victory this weekend.
ON DECK – 2019 Big 12 Championships
The Cyclones will have about two more weeks to prepare for the Big 12 Championships, which begin on Feb. 27 in Austin, Texas. To date, the Cyclones have collected dual meet wins over conference foes West Virginia and TCU, and could land another this weekend at Kansas. They have finished third or better in three of the last four conference championships, and will look to move into the top-three this season after last year's fourth-place finish.
