AMES, Iowa – A hugely successful Friday at the Iowa State Classic saw Edwin Kurgat make ISU history in the men's 5,000-meter run to earn a trip to the 2019 NCAA Indoor Championships. The Cyclones picked up three event wins on Friday to also highlight the action.
Kurgat's time of 13:34.54 in the men's 5,000-meter run took down Jonah Koech's 28-year old school record of 13:36.64 set at the 1991 NCAA Indoor Championships and locked him into the NCAA Indoor Championships with the No. 4 time in Division I this season.
As is tradition with the Iowa State Classic men's 5K, the pace was furious, but Kurgat was able to hold his own against the nation's best. He was in the top-five the whole way, and when the second pacer stepped off the track with 1,000 to go Kurgat found himself in second. It was a great dual between Kurgat and BYU's Clayton Young for the final three laps, off the final turn, Kurgat moved to lane two to try and shoot past Young, but missed out by just 0.08 seconds. However, the job was done as his 13:34.54 gave him one of ISU's oldest school records and his trip to the NCAA Indoor Championships.
In the men's 3K, Dan Curts led the way to finish fourth in 7:57.07, his second sub-8 3,000 of the season, while David Too joined Curts under-8 by finishing ninth in 7:59.57. Too becomes the eighth sub-8 3K Cyclone in program history, four of them are currently on the team (Curts, Andrew Jordan, Kurgat, Too).
On the women's distance side, Amanda Vestri highlighted the evening with a massive personal best in the 5,000-meter run. The sophomore took seventh place in 15:55.37, making her the sixth Cyclone in program history to go under 16 minutes at 5K. In the women's 3K, Cailie Logue notched a personal best to finish in third at 9:10.47, moving her up to No. 6 in ISU history for the event.
Earlier in the day, Vlad Pavlenko continued his outstanding season in the weight throw, dominating the competition with a best throw of 69-9 3/4 (21.28m), the best by almost 11 feet. He also just missed out on another school record in the event, as his second throw was well past his current mark of 71-4, but was adjudged to be a foul.
In the hurdles, the Cyclones swept the completion with Keira Christie-Galloway winning the women's 60 hurdles by tying her PR in 8.29. Mason Weh got the win on the men's side, clocking in with a mark of 7.94.
