DES MOINES, Iowa – Iowa State's men claimed two titles on Friday at the Drake Relays. For the second-straight season, the Cyclones brought home the 4x800-meter relay title after another dramatic battle against Iowa. Earlier in the day, Eric Fogltanz claimed the men's 400-meter hurdles title.
The Cyclones got a clean 1:53.64 open from Edwin Kurgat, making a rare appearance in the half-mile. ISU was in eighth when Roshon Roomes got the stick, but he restored order with his 1:48.70 split to put the Cyclones ahead. A week following his personal best in the 800 at Stanford, Cebastian Gentil had a strong third carry in 1:51.13, meaning it would be a CyHawk battle for the title again. Carter Lilly built up a big lead, but Festus Lagat reeled in his Hawkeye rival with 200 to go and then made the pass out of the turn to bring home the win in 7:20.77. Lagat's 1:47.31 anchor carry was the fastest split in the field.
Lagat and Roomes were on last season's 4x800 team which won at the Drake Relays. Iowa State is the first program to defend the Drake Relays 4x8 title since Minnesota won three-straight from 2011-13. The Cyclones' 7:20.77 ranks at No. 3 in ISU history for the event.
Eric Fogltanz left himself a lot of work to do in the men's 400m hurdles, as he came off the final corner in third place. However, he was able to do the job on the front stretch to catch and pass Iowa's Chris Douglas off the final hurdle to get the win. In the heat before, Mason Weh had his second outstanding run of the day, notching a personal best in 51.37 to finish second. Weh's time moves him into ISU's all-time top-10 at 400 hurdles at No. 10.
Fogltanz is the third Cyclone to bring home the Drake Relays men's 400m hurdles title, joining the elite company of Michael Graham (1990) and Danny Harris (1984).
Iowa State's high hurdlers had an outstanding prelim session, with the men and women each advancing two to tomorrow's final. On the women's side, Keira Christie-Galloway is the top seed after running an all-conditions personal best with a wind-aided 13.09 in the prelims. Her fellow freshman Kaylyn Hall will join her in the final after she posted a wind-aided 13.66 to be the No. 5 seed for tomorrow.
On the men's side, Weh got a legal wind and posted a 13.90, just off his personal best of 13.88 from earlier this season. He will be the No. 2 seed in tomorrow's final. Joining him tomorrow is Logan Schneider, who clinched an auto-bid by winning his heat in a wind-aided 14.07.
Iowa State's first relay of the weekend saw the women take fourth place in the 4x1,600-meter relay. The quartet was Amanda Vestri, Abby Caldwell, Kelly Naumann and Cailie Logue. Logue anchored the Cyclones in 4:45.30, the fastest split of anyone in the field.
