NORMAN, Oklahoma – Iowa State's Cailie Logue claimed the women's 10,000-meter run title, while the Cyclone men brought home 24 team points Friday night on day one at the Big 12 Outdoor Championships at John Jacobs Track. Logue, making her collegiate debut at 10K, got her second conference title in 2018-19 in 33:36.00. Meanwhile, the Cyclone men brought home 24 points in the 10,000-meter run via 2-3-4-5-8 finishes.
After day one, the Cyclone men sit atop the team standings. The Iowa State women's team is in second place with 22 points.
Logue and Vestri took total control of the race, moving ahead by over 10 seconds in the first 800 meters. Their domination was non-stop as they lapped the entire field with seven laps to go. That was the time when Logue made her move on Vestri, who led the first 7,000 meters as she got ahead and pulled away. Logue got the win in the rain in 33:36.00 in her 10K debut, while Vestri took second in 33:47.28.
Logue claimed her first Big 12 track and field title to go with her cross country title she earned in the fall. Logue is the first Cyclone woman to win at 10,000 meters since Katy Moen in 2014. Her winning time was also the second-fastest in Big 12 Outdoor Championship meet history.
John Nownes paced the first mile of the race, but Kansas' Ben Butler decided to break away solo. However, the Cyclones were able to reel him back in with seven to go and create a 1-2-3-4 of Dan Curts, Edwin Kurgat, Thomas Pollard and David Too. The bell lap saw Curts, Kurgat and Too taking on Oklahoma State's Hassan Abdi for the win. Kurgat took control with 250 to go and had the lead onto the front stretch, but Abdi was able to make the pass in the final meters to take the win.
Kurgat led the Cyclone effort with a silver-medal finish in 29:31.98, with Curts finishing third in 29:36.15, Too fourth at 29:37.84 and Pollard fifth in 29:45.65. In his Big 12 Championships debut, Mitchell Day got a point for the Cyclones with his eighth place finish in 30:08.19.
After a first throw foul, Pavlenko bounced back with a third throw of 204-10 (62.43m) to move up to third place at the halfway point. He got into a battle with Oklahoma's Bayley Campbell for the silver medal, with Pavlenko moving up to second with his best of 216-8 (66.04m) and Campbell almost matching him with his best in round five at 214-7 (65.41m). However, Pavlenko was able to hang on to bring home the silver medal.
Also in the field, the Cyclones got points in both javelin events. On the women's side, Bailey Righi notched a personal best with her throw of 141-11 (43.25m) in round four to finish fifth. Blake Hughes added two points for the ISU men, posting a season-best of 182-8 (55.69m).
