LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Iowa State's quest to secure its third-straight NCAA Championship team appearance fell short, but there will be a Cyclone competing at the NCAA Men's Golf Championship, May 24-29 at Blessings Golf Course in Fayetteville, Ark.
Junior Tripp Kinney will play in his third-straight NCAA Championship by winning the individual title at the NCAA Louisville Regional this afternoon.
An Iowa State individual or team has qualified for the NCAA Championship five times in the last eight years (2012, 2014, 2017, 2018, 2019).
Kinney, who held a two-shot lead in the medalist race heading into the final round, fired a final-round 72 this afternoon to hold off Arizona's Trevor Werbylo and UConn's Jimmy Hervol by one shot at 7-under (206) to grab the lone individual qualifying spot in the Regional.
"It is probably the best accomplishment of my life," Kinney said about his first collegiate victory and his team-best sixth top-10 performance of the season. "I have slowly been improving my putting and I felt confident all week. For all of it to come together, it is really special."
Hervol birdied holes 16 and 17 to tie Kinney at 7-under. On hole 18, Hervol missed the par-4 green in two but recovered with an impressive pitch to four feet. His par putt was off the mark, however, avoiding a sudden death playoff.
"I was getting ready for the playoff," Kinney added. "I started to practice, hit a couple of chips and putts. I then found out via text from one of my teammates that I had won."
Kinney becomes the second Cyclone to win a NCAA Regional championship, joining Nick Voke, who won the 2017 NCAA Austin Regional.
The Waukee, Iowa native posted rounds of 69-65-72. His final round featured three bogeys and a pair of birdies. His bogey on his 15th hole today was an excellent scramble. He saved a bogey after taking a penalty shot for an unplayable lie.
It was his second-round 65 that was the difference in the victory. Kinney had six birdies and no bogeys in day two, including birdies on the final three holes where he made a 35-footer and a 45-footer on 16 and 18, respectively.
"On 16 yesterday, I hit a good approach shot, but I had a 45-footer over a ridge and it was a double-breaker," Kinney said. "I left the pin in and got the ball to the top of the ridge and it kept trickling down into the hole. And then on 18, I made a putt just under 50 feet. Those two putts were very huge."
Kinney, who is the first Cyclone individual to qualify for the national meet since All-American Nate McCoy did it in 2012, posted the second-best 54-hole score (206) by a Cyclone in a NCAA Regional (Nick Voke, 199 in 2017).
"Winning a Regional is very special," Kinney added. "Nick (Voke) has been bugging me when I was going to get my first college win. To get this win this late in the season, it gives me a ton of confidence. I am just looking forward to Arkansas and it shows I can play with anybody in the country."
As a team, the Cyclones carded a 297 in the final round, falling seven shots from advancing to the national meet at 867 in eighth place. The top five teams punched tickets to Fayetteville.
No. 1 Oklahoma State won the team title at 838, four shots better than Auburn at 842.
Ricky Costello fired a 75 in the final round, battling back from a 7-over start in his first seven holes. He went 3-under in his last 11 holes to tie for 40th at 219.
Sophomore Lachlan Barker tied for 45th at 221 after firing a 77 in the final round.
"I am so happy for Tripp," Iowa State head coach Andrew Tank said. "He has really worked hard. He just continues to improve and it is really cool for him to get this opportunity. It says a lot about him as a player and how far he has evolved."
Kinney will depart for Arkansas on May 22nd. Stroke play competition will begin on May 24th.
