AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State track and field team begins its road to the 2019 NCAA Track & Field Championships this weekend at the NCAA West Preliminaries, hosted by Sacramento State. Action at Hornet Stadium will take place on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. A complete schedule for Iowa State is located at the bottom of the preview.
All the action will be streamed by FloTrack via its subscription-based FloPro service, here. Live results will be provided by Flash Results, here.
The goal of this weekend is to finish in the top-12 to earn a ticket to the 2019 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by Texas on June 5-8 in Austin.
Of Iowa State's 18 entries this weekend, there are three that will be looking for repeat trips to the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Edwin Kurgat was a First Team All-American in the 5,000-meter run last season, finishing seventh, and will be looking for a second-straight trip to the Outdoor Championships when he runs at 10:45 p.m. Central Time on Saturday night. Joining him in the 5K will be Dan Curts, who missed out on a trip to the National Championships by just 0.02 seconds in 2018.
Eric Fogltanz was a Second Team All-American in the 400-meter hurdles last season and has continued his strong run in the event this season, winning a Drake Relays title and finishing third at the Big 12 Outdoor Championships. His first round run will be Thursday at 7 p.m. Central.
Fogltanz will help lead the men's 4x400-meter relay in its effort to make a second-straight Outdoor Championships. The team of Charlie Johnson, Roshon Roomes, Ben Kelly and Fogltanz dropped a huge 3:05.50 two weeks ago in Norman at the conference championships, earning them a Big 12 silver medal and vaulting themselves into the Top-12 in the region yet again. They will close out the meet for ISU at 11:45 p.m. Central on Saturday night.
Iowa State's other men's entries include Vlad Pavlenko in the hammer throw, Roomes and Festus Lagat in the 800-meter run, David Too in the 10,000-meter run and Logan Schneider and Mason Weh in the 110-meter hurdles.
The Cyclone women bring eight entries into the West Prelims, all of whom will be looking for a first trip to the Outdoor National Championships. The Cyclone women's distance squad had a huge Big 12 Outdoor Championships, with many contenders to advance from the weekend. Big 12 Women's Outdoor Performer of the Year Cailie Logue is one of the top seeds in the 5,000-meter run on Saturday at 10:05 p.m. Central, while Anne Frisbie and Amanda Vestri are among the top-10 seeds in the 10,000-meter run set for Thursday at 11 p.m. Central Time.
Big 12 100-meter hurdles champion Keira Christie-Galloway will be one of the featured competitors in a loaded field, which begins competition at 6:30 p.m. Central on Friday. She will be joined by freshman teammate Kaylyn Hall. Fellow Canadian Erinn Stenman-Fahey will take part in the 800-meter run, beginning Thursday at 10:10 p.m. Central. The steeplechase duo of Abby Caldwell and Big 12 silver medalist Kelly Naumann make their run for Nationals at 10:20 p.m. Central on Friday night.
