AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State swimming and diving team (3-3, 0-0 Big 12) meets South Dakota State (4-2, 3-0 Summit) on Jan. 17 at 5 p.m. for the 12th time in school history. Student athletes will also be collecting new and used shoes for the organization Soles4Souls at the dual.Â
THE OPPONENT- South Dakota State
The Cyclones hold no losses against the Jackrabbits all-time. Common dual opponents both Iowa State and South Dakota State have faced this season include Nebraska, South Dakota and Omaha. Like the Cyclones, the Jackrabbits grabbed a win from South Dakota and Omaha and have been dealt losses from Nebraska. South Dakota has also been handed losses from Northern Iowa, whereas the Cyclones racked up 642 points in comparison to the Panther's 404.5 at the Kansas Classic.
LAST TIME- Iowa Hawkeyes
The Cyclones put up a fight against the Hawkeyes, with Iowa pulling ahead to take the win. Iowa State put up eight season-best times or scores in the dual. Lehr Thorson came within .09 seconds from securing an NCAA 'B' cut time with her performance of 1:01.93 in the 100 breast. The last time a Cyclone has put up a time near Thorson's happened in the 2011-12 season when Imelda Wistey clocked in at 1:01.97. Dana Liva inched her way closer to her PR of 304.35 on the three-meter with her score of 299.10.
At this point in the season, the Cyclones hold 12 improved times or scores when compared to the top performers of last season heading into the new year.Â
WHAT TO WATCH FOR- Breaststroke
Iowa State showed Iowa their dominance as Thorson led the Cyclones to a 100 and 200 breast victory. Martha Haas stole second place from the Hawkeyes in the 100 breast and missed runner-up placement by just .61 seconds in the 200 breast. Bryn Ericksen also tallied points for Iowa State in breaststroke events in the Cyclones' last competition.Â
ON DECK- West Virginia
Next up following South Dakota State, Iowa State travels to face Big 12 foe West Virginia. The first conference dual for the Cyclones will take place on Jan. 25 at 10 a.m.
