KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Iowa State divers wrapped up their weekend at the University of Tennessee Diving Invitational after three days of competition taking place from Jan. 3-5. The invite provided a strong competitive atmosphere throughout all events.
ONE-METER
Dana Liva was the top Iowa State placer, earning 29th with her score of 221.80. Liva's best dive was her fourth where she scored a 43.20 (6, 6, 6) with an inward 1 ½ somersault pike. Following Liva came Michelle Schlossmacher Smith who took 34th with 215.55. Schlossmacher Smith's first dive proved to be her best, scoring a 43.20 (6, 6, 6) with an inward ½ somersault pike. Jayna Misra placed 39th with 208.40. Misra saved her best dive of a back 1 ½ somersault ½ twist free for last, claiming a score of 43.75 (6, 5.5, 6). Alex Aaberg (154.00) and Jessica Coffin (151.85) placed 50th and 51st, respectively. Aaberg and Coffin's first dives ended up being their best. Aaberg recorded a 31.20 (4.0, 4.5, 4.5) with an inward 1 ½ somersault pike and Coffin a 33.35 (5.0, 4.5, 5.0) with a back 1 somersault 1 ½ twist free.
THREE-METER
Three Cyclone divers took part in three-meter diving after Liva had to scratch from competition. Misra ended in 29th with 239.05. Misra's top dive was her fifth, good for 11th place in the round. This dive of a back 1 ½ somersault 1 ½ twist free scored a 49.20 (6.5, 7, 7). Schlossmacher Smith took 35th with 221.50. Her sixth dive of a reverse 1 ½ somersault 1 ½ twist free scored her a 43.75 (6, 6, 5.5). Coffin came in 44th with 171.70. Coffin's third dive of a forward 2 ½ somersault pike scored her a 42.00 (6, 6, 5.5).
PLATFORM
Platform diving was the final event of the Tennessee Invite. Liva returned to competing by placing 20th with 200.25. Her second dive of five scored a 50.50 (6.5, 5.5, 6) with an inward 2 ½ somersault pike. Misra followed, placing 32nd with 163.25. Misra claimed a 46.80 (6, 6, 6) in her first dive of a forward 2 ½ somersault pike. Coffin rounded out Cyclone competitors by placing 35th with 133.30. Coffin claimed a 37.40 (6, 5.5, 5.5) with her second dive of an inward 1 ½ somersault tuck.
"The Tennessee Invitational was an excellent competition with many great divers and a fantastic meet atmosphere," said diving coach Jeff Warrick. "Although we didn't compete as well as I had hoped, I think it was crucial for us to be here and in this very competitive environment. It helped us see where we still have work to do and we look forward to strengthening these areas."
