AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State men's track and field team's record for highest USTFCCCA ranking in program history of No. 10 lasted all of one week, as the Cyclones are up to No. 8 in this week's National Track & Field Ranking Index (TFRI).
It was another record-breaking weekend for a member of the Cyclone men's squad, and once again it was Edwin Kurgat doing the damage to the record board. The senior went to the Armory in New York City for the Dr. Sander Men's 3,000-meter Invitational during the Millrose Games. Despite a slower than expected pace, Kurgat was able to bring home another personal best and school record in 7:49.19, good for No. 5 in NCAA Division I in 2020.
Kurgat took down one of ISU's oldest school records, going past Raf Wyns' 7:49.86 in the indoor 3K from 1986. He also notched his third school record of the season, joining his 5,000-meter run and distance medley relay effort.
With just three weeks left to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships, Kurgat and the Cyclones are in strong position in many events, a strength which is reflected in the rankings. The DMR team of Festus Lagat, Cebastian Gentil, Roshon Roomes and Kurgat continue to be ranked at No. 2 in the country with their school-record 9:28.22 from the Indiana Relays on Jan. 31 still holding strong. Going back to December, Kurgat's 5,000-meter run school record of 13:24.04 from the BU Season Opener also remains at No. 2 in the country for the season.
In the men's 800-meter run, Iowa State continues to have three of the top-nine in the country for the season. Festus Lagat's 1:47.55 and Roshon Roomes 1:47.74 from the Cyclone Open on Jan. 24 is still good for second and fourth, respectively. Meanwhile, Daniel Nixon's altitude-converted 1:48.29 run at the Texas Tech Invitational on Feb. 1 checks in at No. 9 this week.
The continued success of the Cyclone men leads into one of the fastest weekends of the season, with Iowa State being one of the centers of collegiate track and field this weekend with the 2020 Iowa State Classic, a meet which produced a combined 13 NCAA Indoor Championships qualifying marks in 2019. Competition will take place on Friday and Saturday at the Harry Hoak Track inside the Lied Recreation Athletic Center. For more information, click here.
