AMES, Iowa – For the first time in the USTFCCCA ranking era (2008-Present), the Iowa State men's track and field team are ranked in the top-10, checking in at No. 10 of this week's National Track & Field Ranking Index (TFRI). The Cyclone men's previous regular season high was No. 19 in 2015.
Iowa State got a huge addition to its points total this past weekend after the outstanding performance of the men's distance medley relay, which consisted of Festus Lagat, Cebastian Gentil, Roshon Roomes and Edwin Kurgat. At the Indiana Relays on Friday night, the quartet ran the DMR in 9:28.22, a new school record and the No. 2 time in the nation this seasons. Kurgat (No. 2 at 5,000m), Lagat (No. 6 and 800m) and Roomes (No. 9 at 800m) also are in the rankings for individual performances.
In Lubbock at the Texas Tech Invitational, Daniel Nixon was unable to improve his time on the track in the 800-meters, being 0.02 off his 1:48.58 he ran at the Cyclone Open on Jan. 25, but an altitude conversion for NCAA Indoor Championships qualifying purposes brought the senior's time to 1:48.29, ranking No. 15 in the index.
ISU's strength in the 800 meters was reflected in the USTFCCCA Event Squad Rankings also released on Monday, which had the Cyclones No. 1 for the event. The rankings, which averages out the top-marks of each team's top-four competitors, sees Lagat, Roomes, Nixon and Leonel Perez (1:52.81 at Indiana last weekend) average out to 1:49.10 as a group.
The Cyclone men will have another opportunity to add points to the list this weekend, with Kurgat making the trip to New York for the Millrose Games on Saturday. His track-size converted 7:53.71 from last season's Camel City Classic ranks No. 16 in this week's rating index, but next Monday will be the first ranking where marks from prior to 2020 are dropped.
Iowa State will also have student-athletes in action at the Husker Invitational this weekend in Lincoln, Nebraska.
