AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State swimming and diving team (5-4, 0-1 Big 12) faces conference opponent Kansas (6-1, 0-0 Big 12) on Feb. 7 at 6 p.m. and Feb. 8 at 10 a.m. Iowa State's nine seniors will be honored on Feb. 8. The dual is the final meet before the Cyclones head to the Big 12 Championships.Â
THE OPPONENT- Kansas
Iowa State and Kansas last met at the 2019 Kansas Classic where the Cyclones placed second behind the Jayhawks. In last year's meeting, Kansas defeated Iowa State 201-93. Lucia Rizzo was the lone title winner as she took first in the 200 fly.Â
Kansas' one loss this season came from No. 21 Arizona State. Common competitors between the Cyclones and Jayhawks include South Dakota and Nebraska. Iowa State and Kansas both were victorious against South Dakota. Iowa State lost by a narrow margin to Nebraska earlier this season, whereas Kansas picked up the win.
LAST TIME- UNI/North Texas
The Cyclones grabbed two victories the last time out. Through 14 event victories, the Cyclones won 240-108 against UNI and 227-121 against North Texas.Â
Michelle Schlossmacher Smith and Jayna Misra were dominant in diving events, taking either first or second through prelims and finals. Schlossmacher Smith picked up a 303.60 in prelims and Misra claimed a 280.60 in finals on the three-meter.Â
WHAT TO WATCH FOR- Butterfly
Iowa State secured the title in both butterfly events against UNI and North Texas. Rizzo took first in the 200 fly by 4.68 seconds with her time of 2:04.90. Capturing her first collegiate title was freshman Trinity Gilbert in the 100 fly. GIlbert beat out the runner-up finisher by .76 seconds with a time of 58.09.
ON DECK- Big 12 Championships
Following the meet, Iowa State will prepare for the Big 12 Championships in Morgantown, West Virginia. Competition will begin Feb. 26 and run through Feb. 29.
