AMES, Iowa – Iowa State's track and field student-athletes who missed out on competition at the 2020 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships due to the season's cancelation have been honored as All-Americans, the USTFCCCA announced on Tuesday.
In conjunction with the NCAA Division I Track & Field Executive Committee, the USTFCCCA decided that all entries into the 2020 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships would receive All-American recognition, with no distinction of "First Team", "Second Team" or "Honorable Mention". Relay entries have had the quartet who produced the performance during the regular season recognized.
The Cyclones' honorees include Edwin Kurgat (men's 3,000 and 5,000m run), Festus Lagat (men's 800m run), Roshon Roomes (men's 800m run), Daniel Nixon (men's 800m run), Cailie Logue (women's 5,000m run) and the men's distance medley relay team (Lagat, Cebastian Gentil, Roomes, Kurgat).
Kurgat was one of four men in NCAA Division I to collect three All-America honors during the indoor season. The Big 12 Men's Indoor Performer of the Year and now two-time Gary Thompson Iowa State Male Athlete of the Year, Kurgat set school records in the mile, 3K, 5K and as part of the DMR. At the Big 12 Championships in February, Kurgat won the 3K and 5K for a second-straight season and claimed bronze in the mile, leading Iowa State to its first team track and field title in the Big 12 Era.
The Cyclones' impressive 800-meter run trio was one of eight men's individual event groups in NCAA Division I to have at least three student-athletes earn All-America honors in 2020. Lagat led the way, running the No. 2 800m time in the country in 2020 with his 1:47.50, with Roomes (the Big 12 Champion at 600y and 800m) checking in at No. 5 at 1:47.74 and Nixon (the Big 12 silver medalist at 800m) being No. 12 at 1:48.29.
Lagat, Roomes and Kurgat were joined on the men's distance medley relay team by Cebastian Gentil. The quartet ran to a school-record 9:28.22 at the Indiana Relays in January, posting the fifth-fastest DMR mark of the season in NCAA Division I. Lagat and Roomes were First Team All-Americans as part of the distance medley relay at the 2019 NCAA Indoor Championships, when the Cyclones finished fifth.
Logue was No. 10 in NCAA Division I at 5,000m with her 15:50.15 at the BU Season Opener. Logue, Iowa State's Celia Barquin Arozamena Female Athlete of the Year, claimed Big 12 titles at 3,000 and 5,000 meters at the conference championships.
Updating All-American counts, Kurgat leads the Cyclones now as a nine-time All-American across cross country and track and field, eight of which came with him as a Cyclone. Roomes moves up to six All-American certificates, while Lagat now has four. Logue got her second, her first in track and field after she was an All-American during the 2019 cross country season. Gentil and Nixon both earned All-America honors for the first time in their respective careers.
