IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Iowa State tennis team made it a clean sweep of the singles and doubles titles at the ITA Central Regional Championship on Monday afternoon at the University of Iowa.
Top-seeded Thasaporn Naklo continued her run through the singles bracket to become the first Cyclone in program history to win an ITA event. Later in the afternoon, Miska Kadleckova and Sofia Cabezas downed their Cyclone teammates, Naklo and Christin Hsieh, to claim the doubles crown.
Naklo advanced to the finals with a 7-6 (5), 7-6 (4) win over No. 68 Malkia Ngounoue of Kansas. She trailed 6-5 in both sets but rallied to earn the victory.
In the finals, Naklo beat Kansas State's Karine-Marion Job, 6-3, 0-6, 6-0. Naklo dropped just one set in the tournament, which came in the championship match, and improved to 10-1 overall this fall. She has now won two of her three tournaments.
Kadleckova and Cabezas took control in the first set of the doubles final with a 7-5 win, but Naklo and Hsieh rallied right back to even the match with a 6-4 second set win.
The third set saw Kadleckova and Cabezas regain the momentum en route to a 10-4 win in the tiebreak, becoming the first Cyclones' doubles pairing to win an ITA championship.
Both Cyclones doubles pair and Naklo in singles will be in action starting Nov. 4 at the ITA Fall National Championships in San Diego, California.
