CEDAR FALLS, Iowa. – The Iowa State swimming and diving team (0-0) begins regular season against the UNI Panthers (1-0, 0-0 MVC) on Oct. 9 at 2 p.m. The Cyclones travel to the Glen F. Henry Swimming and Diving Pool the 35th meeting in the series history.
THE OPPONENT- Northern Iowa
Iowa State holds an overall record against Northern Iowa of 33-1, with the lone loss happening in 1992. Most recently, the Cyclones beat the Panthers last January by a score of 212-86, the fourth-largest margin of victory against Northern Iowa.
The Panthers began their season claiming their first program win over the Iowa Hawkeyes, where they took six event titles. UNI swept both backstroke and butterfly events and the Panther's Taylor Hagan earned MVC Diver of the Week honors for her one- and three-meter performances in the historic victory.Â
LAST TIME- Cardinal and Gold
Gold overpowered Cardinal, 134-90, in the Cyclones first head-to-head competition of the season. Upsets included Gold's Trinity Gilbert's win in the 200 IM over Cardinal's Lucia Rizzo while many commanding early season times were turned in. Newcomers showed key contributions with Carley Caughron taking first in the 50 free and 100 fly and Lauren Kimball diving to third in the combined one-meter and platform event and fourth on the three-meter.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR- Sprint Free
The 50 free could prove to be a freshman battle between the Panthers and Cyclones. Both UNI's Faith Larsen (23.98) and Iowa State's Caughron (24.29) touched for the event title in their last time out. Similar times in the 100 free were also turned in between the competitors, including Sophia Goushchina's time of 53.48 and UNI's Larsen's time of 53.66.
ON DECK- South Dakota State and South Dakota
Iowa State continues their road stint beginning with SDSU on Friday, Oct. 15th at 5 p.m. followed up with South Dakota on the 16th at 1 p.m. The first chance to catch a dual at Beyer Pool is Saturday, Oct. 30 at 11 a.m. where the Cyclones take on the Nebraska Huskers.
