TOPEKA, Kan. – Iowa State swimmers remain steady at second with 533 points, 290 points behind Kansas and 235 points ahead of Indiana State after two days of competition. Martha Haas and the 800 free relay performances highlighted the day by recording numerous all-time top times.
Haas turned in her second all-time top time of the day in the 100 breast, knocking off two of her previous times in the act. The senior touched second in finals with 1:02.02, the 18th-fastest in program history.
Right with Haas, Lehr Thorson tallied herself a commanding 100 breast time of 1:02.33 for fifth. Alaina Breitbach (1:03.20, 6th) and Paige Hanley (1:04.03, 8th) aided in filling half the pool with Cyclones in the championship heat.
Lucia Rizzo notched herself a second-place finish in the 400 IM with 4:22.71, dropping her prelims time by 1.93 seconds. Rizzo saw her next 'A' finals within 15 minutes of touching the wall as she swam to eighth in the 100 fly with 56.82.
Sydney Jackson led the pack in 400 IM 'B' finals to touch within a second of her PR to finish ninth overall. Jackson widened the gap between competitors every length of the pool to touch over three seconds before the next swimmer.
Three other Cyclones rallied for points in 400 IM 'B' finals as Fallon DeWitt touched 11th (4:30.42), Mallory Miller grabbed 13th (4:31.79) and Trinity Gilbert claimed 14th (4:32.08). Both DeWitt and Gilbert shaved over two seconds from their prelims times.
Swimming alongside Rizzo in 100 fly 'A' finals was Winter Craig, notching seventh with 56.48.
In 100 fly 'B' finals, the duo of Carley Caughron (56.11, 12th) and Elizabeth Richardson (56.26, 13th) both notched new PRs for the second time of the day.
Ashley Bengtson and Brinley Horras took their second trip to distance 'A' finals of the meet, this time in the 200 free. Bengtson took a top-three finish of 1:50.78 and Horras came in sixth with 1:51.39, both trimming down their prelims times.
Richardson (55.63, 6th) and Emily Haan (55.79, 8th) finished strong in 100 back 'A' finals to tally 23 points together.
In 100 back 'B' finals, Gilbert and Sophia Goushchina matched on the dot at 56.85 for 13th. Maddie Ziegert finished 16th with 57.50 after setting a PR of 56.56 in the morning session.
Iowa State powered through to first in the 800 free relay with 7:24.91 to conclude day two. The time crossed off both the old No. 10 performance and time and replaced it themselves with the team of Rizzo, B. Horras, Jackson and Bengtson.
"Our 800 free relay finished the night off with first place and Ashley anchored it and swam a perfect race," Head Coach Duane Sorenson said. "She did what she had to do and came from behind and ended up winning it with her best time ever."
