Gomez Runs to School Record in 1,000m at ISU Classic

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State's middle distance strength was on display again Friday afternoon at the Iowa State Classic, with a big school record and facility record coming in the men's 1,000-meter run.
Jason Gomez was once again the guy making history for the Cyclones, with the sophomore going 2:19.11 in the 1,000-meter run, a new school record and the third-fastest mark run in the indoor 1,000m in collegiate history. The event winner and new facility record holder at Harry Hoak Track was ISU's old school record holder in the 1,000, Festus Lagat. Lagat, competing unattached in preparation for outdoor season, used his big finish to pick up the win in 2:18.98, taking down Edward Kemboi's old facility mark of 2:21.60 run in 2016. Roshon Roomes, also competing unattached, also ran a PR to finish third in 2:19.13.
Another unattached All-American put on a big show in the field as Vlad Pavlenko showed what he will be ready to do come outdoor season. In the weight throw, the two-time All-American picked up the victory with a huge personal best of 73-4 1/2 (22.36m), over a foot further than his previous best. Pavlanko backed up his performance with the three best throws of the day, his best coming on his fifth effort of the day.
In the women's 5,000 meters, another unattached Cyclone in Abby Caldwell notched a personal best, taking ninth in 16:23.93.

Iowa State returns to the Lied Recreation Athletic Center on Saturday for the final day of competition at the Iowa State Classic. Running events start at noon, with the lone field event (shot put) beginning at 1 p.m.
