AMES, Iowa – It is a big weekend for Iowa State track and field, as the Cyclones head to two of the biggest meets in the country on Friday and Saturday. The mid-distance and distance squads are in Oregon for the Hayward Premiere, while the rest of the Cyclones head to Gainesville for the Florida Relays. Both meets will have competition on Friday and Saturday.
The running events at the Hayward Premiere begin Friday at 7:20 p.m. Central and 3:05 p.m. Central on Saturday. Free live video will be provided by RunnerSpace, here, while live results will be from Athletic.net, here.
The Florida Relays begins on Friday with field events at 1 p.m. Central and running events at 5 p.m. Central. Saturday's competition in Gainesville will begin at 9 a.m. Central in the field and 11 a.m. Central on the track. There will be no live video, while live results will be provided by Delta Timing, here.
The Cyclones are among the headliners in a very strong Hayward Premiere entry list for the long-awaited debut of the new Hayward Field, which will be home of the 2021 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, the 2021 U.S. Olympic Trials and the 2022 IAAF World Championships. The feature race for the Cyclones will come on Friday at 11:20 p.m. Central with Cyclone NCAA champions Wesley Kiptoo and Edwin Kurgat entered in the men's 10,000-meter run. Kiptoo, the NCAA Indoor champion at 5,000 meters last month, already has a school-record 27:37.29 at 10K which he ran at The Track Meet in December. Kurgat, the 2019 NCAA Cross Country Champion, this will be his first chance to run a fast 10K as a Cyclone has his PR of 29:31.98 came in a tactical conference championships environment. They will be joined by Mitchell Day, fresh off his 41st-place effort at the NCAA Cross Country Championships.
The men's invitational races will also see many ISU stars in action. The 800-meter invite on Saturday at 4:35 p.m. Central will feature Festus Lagat, Daniel Nixon and Roshon Roomes, all of whom were qualifiers at 800m for the 2020 NCAA Indoor Championships. Lagat will also be in the invitational 1,500m on Friday at 9:50 p.m. Central. David Too already has a solid 8:55.69 in the 3,000m steeplechase to his name, and gets another shot Friday at 8:20 p.m. Central. Thomas Pollard will open his outdoor season in the 5,000-meter run Friday at 10:20 p.m. Central in a loaded field which includes a BYU contingent led by NCAA Cross Country national champion Conner Mantz and Oregon's Eduardo Herrera.
The ISU women only have two entries in Eugene, but they are big ones, with Cailie Logue in the women's 10,000m Invite at 10:40 p.m. Central and Abby Caldwell in the 3,000m steeplechase at 8:05 p.m. Central. Logue clocked a 32:19.37 at The Track Meet in December and is part of a very strong field featuring the majority of BYU's NCAA Cross Country title winning team and Arkansas' Katie Izzo. Caldwell is No. 12 nationally in the steeplechase after her 10:19.00 in Austin last month.
The Florida Relays contingent features its set of stars as well. For the Cyclone men, Eric Fogltanz finally returns to his premiere event in the 400-meter hurdles Friday at 6:45 p.m., his first time in the event since the 2019 USATF Championships. He is also entered in the 400-meter dash Saturday at 1:30 p.m. Vlad Pavlenko will look to bounce back from a disappointing foul out in the hammer throw last week at Drake against a strong field which includes NCAA Indoor weight throw champ Thomas Mardal of Florida. That competition will be Friday at 2 p.m. Central.
The Cyclone women will see many of its sprinters and hurdlers making season debuts, with Tatiana Aholou taking on the long jump Friday at 4 p.m. Central and the 100-meter hurdles to begin Saturday. The ISU women's throwers had a good weekend at Drake, winning all four events, and are all back in action this weekend. Emily March will get that group started in the discus Friday at 1 p.m. Central.
