LAWRENCE, Kansas – Iowa State opened up its weekend at the Rock Chalk Classic with some huge performances that put its student-athletes among the best nationally in their respective events.
The highlight of the day at Rock Chalk Park came in the men's 800-meter run. An audible in the travel schedule meant ISU's mid-distance squad, originally planning on going to Mississippi State, would be joining the rest of the team in Lawrence. The change of scenery did not make an impact on the performances, as Festus Lagat was about to prove.
Roshon Roomes was on pacing duty and led the field through 400m in 51.13. While ex-Kansas NCAA Champ Bryce Hoppel came home for the win, it was Lagat who was able to lead the kick among the collegians and take the next position in a time of 1:46.09, moving him atop NCAA Division I at the time of publication.
Daniel Nixon entered the NCAA top-15 with his 1:47.81, bumping Roomes out of that spot, and also entered ISU's all-time top-10 list at No. 8. Leonel Perez was the winner of the second section, continuing his momentum from last weekend's Drake Relays win with a 1:50.23, a new personal best.
In the field, Vlad Pavlenko went off in the men's hammer throw with another historic series. The All-American broke his school record from the Florida Relays three weeks ago three different times on Friday, with his best throw coming on his fourth throw at 237-6 (72.41m), adding nearly 15 feet to his previous personal best and school record of 222-9. At the time of publication, Pavlenko's mark is No. 4 in NCAA Division I this season.
Scott Fuchs had an outstanding day in the men's javelin competition. He got things rolling with a bang, posting his personal best with a 217-9 (66.38m) on his first throw of the day. He followed up with some more solid throws, but saved his best for last as he fired a 218-10 (66.71m) to take second place. Fuchs also moved up to second in ISU history in the event from fourth, with today's effort an improvement on his previous-best of 216-3 set at the Longhorn Invitational last month.
For the Iowa State women, The 1,500-meter group all put up strong performances, with ISU going 3-4 via Abby Caldwell (4:28.33) and Janette Schraft (4:29.64), while Madelynn Hill notched a big personal best of 4:32.20 to finish eighth. In the 400-meter hurdles, Bria Barnes dropped over two seconds off her PR to take sixth in 1:01.08.
