LINCOLN, Nebraska – The Iowa State swimming and diving team (0-1, 0-0 Big 12) dropped the contest to Nebraska (2-0, 0-0 Big Ten) by a score of 151-149. The close meet featured two races that Iowa State and Nebraska had with top finishers within 0.7 seconds or less.
"What a great way to set the season, it's just disappointing that we lost by two points," head coach Duane Sorenson said. "You can turn around and look at every race, it was fifth to a fourth, or third to a second that could've changed the meet. It was just a great effort by our team, and we have a lot to work on, but the best part about it is we have a lot of room for improvement."
Freshman Gabrielle LePine took home her first two collegiate wins, placing herself on the all-time top 20 list in her debut. She placed first in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:03.71 (putting her No. 17 all-time in ISU history). She also had a time of 2:19.90 in the 200 breast, just missing out on the ISU all-time top-20 and marking a dominant first meet.
"It's very exciting to see our freshmen step up and handle their first meet so well," Sorenson said. "On the 200 backstroke Madi Dohrn just went out for it and hung on for the win."
Dohrn marked her collegiate debut with a victory in the 200 back, touching the wall in 2:03.88.
Carley Caughron was another swimmer who picked up two victories. Caughron had a time of 23.97 in the 50 free and followed that up in the 100 free with a time of 51.87 seconds.
"I thought overall Carley Caughron just did an outstanding job in all four of her swims," Sorenson said.
Senior Sophia Goushchina took first place with 56.16 seconds in the 100-yard backstroke.
Trinity Kay was victorious in the 200 IM in 2:06.46, and also added a second place effort in the 100 butterfly, with Lucia Rizzo taking third.
The Cyclones had a pair of close second places in the freestyle events. Brinley Horras, who earlier in the meet took second in the 1,000 free in 10:18.61, missed out on a win in the 500 free by 0.6 seconds, touching in 4:58.74. In the 200 free, Ashley Bengtson took second in 1:52.77, missing out on a win by 0.7 seconds.
The diving team landed third place in both events for their highest placement. With a score of 262.35 in the 3-meter diving was Joscelyn Buss. Jayna Misra dove the 1-meter with a score of 254.40.
